Addendum. 1887-1984

In addition to the administrative records described in the four record groups, the Braga Brothers Collection contains memorabilia, photographs, maps and plans, memoirs, genealogical materials, and family correspondence that fall outside the parameters of the record groups. Some of the addendum materials were donated by the Braga family subsequent to the original gift in 1981 and were not described in the initial collection finding guides. Included in the later donations were the memoir, entitled "A Bundle of Relations", of George Atkinson Braga and correspondence of George Braga's mother, Margaret Atkinson Braga. Of special interest in the papers of Margaret Braga are the accounts by her sister, Anne Risely, of life at the Central Francisco in 1904. Included in the personal papers of Bernardo Braga, Record Group 3, Series 8, are recollections of his youth in Spain and his business career.

The photograph series contains images of people, places, and activities associated with the collection. Some photographs were pulled from other series and are identified accordingly. Most, though, were found separate from the records and many were added to the collection in 1993 with the personal papers of Bernardo Braga and George Braga. The latter include many photographs of family members as well as employees of the Czarnikow-Rionda Company and the Cuban Trading Company. Also evident in the photograph series are images of the cane fields and mills of the Manati and Francisco sugar companies. The series also contains aerial photograpahic maps of Manati and Francisco. Additional photographs from the estate of Elena Doty Angus were purchased in 2009.

Maps and plans are described in Series 30. Most of the materials in this series were pulled from the files of Manuel Rionda y Polledo, but other items were not identified as part of an existing series. The maps document several areas of Cuba including the property holdings of Francisco and Manati. Maps of both sugar companies are also found in Series 83 and Series 45. In addition, Series 30 contains maps of the areas around the Tuinucu Sugar Company, the Cespedes Sugar Company, and the Tacajo Sugar Company. Also included in Series 30 are maps of the warehouse districts of Matanzas and Tunas del Zaza and more general maps of Cuba depicting the location of sugar mills.

The memorabilia and artifact series was derived largely from materials found in records series. Many of the objects were selected as possible display items. Among the items in the series are stock certificates, business and calling cards, decorative business stationery, and objects illustrative of the sugar industry such as warehouse receipts, identity certificates, and laboratory reports.

The addendum contains six series.

Series 17: Papers of Margaret Atkinson Braga and Anne Atkinson Risely. 1901-1921

This series contains letters, poems, and keepsakes received by Margaret (Maud) Atkinson Braga. Most of the letters are from her brothers and sisters and her husband, Bernardo Braga Rionda. Of special note, are the materials from her sister, Anne (Nan) Atkinson Risely (Mrs. Wallace Risely), including an unpublished manuscript describing the land and people at the Central Francisco in Guayabal, Cuba in 1904 where Wallace Risely and Higinio Fanjul briefly operated the Colonia Esperanza.

Series 20: Memorabilia and artifacts. 1883-1965

The Braga Brothers Collection contains cultural materials that cannot be described adequately as archival record. As these items are found, they are separated from their original records series and described here. Materials chosen for this series include ephemera such as railroad passes and bank checks, stock certificates of companies, memorabilia associated with the Braga and Rionda families, and historical artifacts such as company seals and ink stamps.

Researchers are encouraged to suggest materials for this series.

Series 22: Photographs. 1887-1960

Series 22 contains photographic materials. The first part of the series consists of photographs found in the original accession and separated from other series in the collection. Most were pulled from series in Record Group 4 and Series 10 in Record Group 2. The series includes two photographic studies of cane growth, one done at Manati and the other at Francisco, and aerial maps of the properties of the Manati Sugar Company and the Francisco Sugar Company. The latter were created in 1952 when both companies initiated cattle operations. The maps indicate cane fields, rail lines, pastures, mill and port facilities, and property occupied by squatters. The map of the Francisco properties includes mosaic enlargements. Of special note are photographs of a cellulose factory at the Central Tuinucu in the 1920s. There are also scrapbooks depicting reconstruction of the Regla piers in Havana, reforestation projects at several plantations, kenaf production, and loading operations at Guayabal.

In 1992, additional photographs were donated by the Braga Family. These are contained in Box 6 and include photographs of people and buildings at the Central Tuinucu in 1905. Also included were many images of Bernardo Braga and his son, George Braga, photographs taken at Rio Vista, more photographs of Manati, Tuinucu, and Francisco, and family photographs taken at Varadero in the late 1940s.

In 2009, the Libraries purchased a collection of photographs from Crown Collectibles in Richmond, Virginia. The collection came from the estate of Elena Doty Angus, daughter of Oliver Keese Doty and Elena Rionda Doty, and consists of three albums and loose photographs. Elena Rionda Doty (Nenita) was the daughter of Francisco Rionda Y Polledo and Elena de la Torriente. Oliver Doty was an administrator at the Tuinucu Sugar Company where he served as manager for many years. (See correspondence in Series 1 and Series 10.)

The Doty collection consists of three albums as well as loose photographs. The first album is entitled "Album of Francisco Rionda y Torriente, Brooklyn, New York, December 24, 1894." Francisco, also known as Panchito, was the oldest child of Francisco Rionda y Polledo. He died in 1943. An inscription on the back of one photo indicates that Elena Doty Angus identified some of the people on November 2, 1960. Items 1-18 were found in the first album when the collection was purchased in 2009. Some of the earlier loose photographs may have been part of the first album and later removed.

The second album begins shortly after the birth of Elena Doty (Angus) who is shown with her mother and maternal grandmother. On the second page she appears with her father, Oliver Keese Doty. Yisdora Rionda y Polledo also appears frequently as does as an Afro-Cuban woman who presumably was Elena's nurse. Elena's brother John is frequently seen. The earliest photographs were taken at the Central Tuinucu. In the summers, the family is often depicted at Sandisfield, Massachusetts. Other locations include Alpine, New Jersey, at Manuel Rionda's Riovista estate on the Hudson. Manuel Rionda is also seen in photographs taken at Tuinucu where he visited during the sugar harvests. After 1919, Elena is more frequently depicted outside Cuba.

Album three begins in 1923. By then Elena was living primarily in the United States, but she made regular trips to Cuba. She also visited Rio Vista several times. In many photographs, Elena is often shown with children of her own age but they are rarely identified. There is a strange and interesting photograph of Manuel Rionda with a group of girls where he is holding a calf. During one visit to Riovista in 1928, Placido Alonso, Jr. (Placidito) is identified. There is also a photograph of him at age 2. Of special note is a group of photographs taken at "cousin Higinio's place" in 1929. Higinio Fanjul's son Alfonso is shown. On another page, Elena appears in Tunas del Zaza on a boat named Elena IV. There are many shots of Tuinucu as well as the city of Sancti Spiritus. There are several photos taken at a beach at Manati. There are two pages from 1931 depicting Tuinucu and Sancti Spiritus that are out of order. The later pages depict Elena at school at Choate and Sweet Briar College. There are also photos of the Trinity Pawling School that her brother John attended.

There are many group shots of family outings in albums 2 and 3, but the photographs almost never identify individuals.

Photographs Separated from Other Series.

Series 23: Family history and genealogy.

Contains materials related to the histories of several families associated with the Braga Brothers Collection. Included is the family tree of Don Bernardo de la Rionda y Alvarez and Doña Josefa Polledo y Mata tracing their lineage up to the early 1960s. Also included is an historical narrative of the life of Manuel Rionda y Polledo from 1898 to 1943. This history, commissioned by Jose Fanjul y Gomez-Mena in 1985, highlights the emergence of Higinio Fanjul as a leader of the Cuban Trading Company and a central figure in the Cuban sugar industry. The series also includes the research notes compiled by Jane Landers who was the principal author of the history. These notes provide a good overview to the subject matter in the earliest letterbooks of Manuel Rionda y Polledo (Series 2).

Of related interest is the memoir of George Atkinson Braga, "A Bundle of Relations," in Series 24.

Series 24: Memoir of George A. Braga entitled "A Bundle of Relations". Circa 1980

Photocopy of unpublished manuscript. "A Bundle of Relations" is part memoir and part family history. Early family history is derived from family and business records, some of which are no longer extant. The first chapter is a fictionalized account of Manuel Rionda y Polledo's sixtieth birthday party. Chapters 2-6 cover roughly the same period as Record Group 1 plus the years between 1883 and 1897. Chapters 7-12 span the years 1898-1945. Subsequent chapters take the reader to the rise of Fidel Castro and the confiscation of the family's holdings in Cuba. The author provides through personal recollection and family documents descriptions of the business operations of Czarnikow-Rionda and several Cuban sugar estates.
