The
Florida Union, designed by architect Rudolph Weaver, was in operation
by 1936 as a multipurpose student center. It endured a lengthy construction
schedule during the Depression because of funding problems. One of
the building's distinctive features, a stained glass window prominent on
its east facade, was not in place until 1938. In 1967, the Union
became the Arts and Sciences Building and served the College of Liberal
Arts and Sciences. It was renamed, in 1975, for Dr. Manning Dauer,
chair of the Political Science Department, 1950-75. After renovation,
the west wing of the building became Keene Faculty Center in 1998.
Dauer
Hall is among the buildings constituting the University of Florida Campus
Historic District, an historic area added to the National Register in 1989.
