Scope and Content
Originally recorded on reel-to-reel and reformatted to digital audio in May 2004.
This tape was made during the evening part of the dedication of new additions to the University of Florida Library. President J. Hillis Miller speaks and refers to the speech by Douglas Southall Freeman during the afternoon part of the dedicatory program. Miller speaks about the need for new library facilities and the creative writing library. He then introduces Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. After Rawlings' address, Dr. Miller introduces the author Edith Pope who mentions the gift of the Rawlings manuscripts and how it will help to develop a wonderful library. Dr. Miller then starts to tell a story but the tape ends abruptly.
The second part of the tape begins with Dr. Miller relating a humerous story about Julien Chandler Yonge whom he then introduces. Mr. Yonge elaborates on the importance of the Rawlings gift to the library and the inspiration it will be to future students. Dr. Miller ends the program and mentions that the University is about to launch a full scale program for the erection of an Inter-American building.
A printed copy of Rawlings' speech can be found in the Rare Book Collection.
