Scope and Content
Originally recorded on reel-to-reel and reformatted to digital audio in May 2004.
These tapes were recorded by Dr. Guy Miles, Associate Professor of English at the University of Florida, in 1967 and 1968. They represent aspects of African American life and speech in rural central Florida near McIntosh, Florida.
Digital file created in April 2004 from a reel-to-reel recording. An order slip from the Library of Congress found in the tape box indicates that this recording is held at the Library of Congress and that a copy was made for the University of Florida.
Four recording sessions are included. The first recorded in March 1967 takes place on Miss Bessie's back porch and she speaks about Miss Liza (Eliza Washington). They are joined by Miss Liza and Big Bessie. This is followed closely by what is referred to as the "Obituary Tape" which was made at the request of Miss Liza. On the tape which was made in August 1967 Miss Liza answers questions from Dr. Miles regarding her life experiences such as her growing up in Jessup, Georgia, her education, her two marriages, and her various moves. The third session is Miss Bessie's narrative. The recording was made Sunday afternoon, June 30, 1968, after the funeral of Miss Liza. Miss Bessie recounts things about Miss Liza and her life. The fourth and last session was recorded on Tuesday, July 2, 1968, in Fred Ward's store. Various stories about Miss Liza and others are cited by Fred Ward.
Tape is accompanied by typed script and a photocopy of the funeral program for Eliza Washington.
