Notes: The Caxto Club used several variations of its device throughout its history. "After centuries of search the significance of the central symbol of William Caxton's curious device (which, with the addition of its initials becomes the Caxton Club device) is not known. It has been explained variously as the Arabic numerals 47, or perhaps 74, commemorating an important event; as a mark used in mercery, in which Caxton had been engaged; and also as his personal trademark." © James Lamar Weygand
