The Department of Special & Area Studies at the University of Florida holds a Joseph Ishill and Oriole Press collection of manuscripts, archives, and approximately 700 blocks. They range from original wood-engraved blocks from the 19th century to magnesium and copper cuts and to engraved blocks done by contemporary artists. Part of the collection consists of blocks cut by Lucienne Bloch. Most were used in the printing of Free Vistas, Oriole Press, 1933. Some have no record of ever having been printed by Ishill. Several of the blocks have been cut on both sides. Most have titles and Lucienne Bloch's name written on them. Curiously, there is no correspondence between Bloch and Ishill either here or in the Ishill manuscript collection at Harvard University.
The arrangement below gives the thumbnail linked to a larger image, the page number in Free Vistas on which it appears, a transcription of any writing that appears on the block, and the size in millimeters of the block. If the image is of a cut done on the back of block, it will be labeled "verso." For more information on Lucienne Bloch, please go to The Artwork of Lucienne Bloch. A related collection at the University of Florida is the Robert Strassburg Collection of Ernest Bloch. |
