L.I.G.'s first book was dedicated to John Boyle O'Reilly, a close friend of her father and editor of the Pilot (Boston). O'Reilly published her first printed poem, "Charles Sumner," in the Pilot, December 11, 1880, when Guiney was nineteen years old.
