Biographical/Historical Note

The Federal Writers Project was created in 1935 as an employment project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the New Deal program established during the Great Depression. Unemployed writers, editors and scholars were hired to complete several writing projects, such as the American Guide series, which compiled information on states, counties and cities.


Scope and Content

This collection contains lists of historical sites for each county in the state of Florida. Each county list includes an index of the researched sites, as well as site classifications (i.e., military, plantation, natural phenomena, historical, etc.). This information is a valuable resource for the study of Florida’s counties up to the time of the Great Depression.
