Biographical/Historical Note

Park Trammell was born in Macon County, Alabama, on April 9, 1876. His family moved to Florida when he was an infant, and he was raised in Polk County near Lakeland. He studied law at Vanderbilt University and received his LL.B. degree from Cumberland University in 1899. He practiced law in Lakeland, and served for terms as mayor of that city (1899-1903). He also was a citrus grower and an owner-editor of a newspaper.

A lifelong Democrat, he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1902, and to the State Senate in 1904. He served in the Florida Senate from 1904-1908, holding the President's office in 1905. From 1909-1913 he was the Attorney General of Florida, and in 1913 he became the 21st Governor of Florida (1913-1917). He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1916, and was reelected for three more terms. He died while in office on May 8, 1936.

Scope and Content

The collection, which spans 1893-1938, includes campaign files, correspondence, legislative files, speeches, photographs, news clippings, and miscellaneous memorabilia. Although the collection covers Trammell's entire career, there are numerous gaps and the collection is not comprehensive. The campaign files, for example, only cover the campaigns for the State Legislature, the Governor's office, and three of his elections to the U.S. Senate.
