Biographical/Historical Note
The South Lake Apopka Citrus Growers Association was established in Oakland, Florida in 1909. The Growers Association, one of the largest in Orange County, was formed by James H. Sadler, L.W. Tilden, G.R. Croft, D.L. Pierson, S.B. Hull and A.W. Hurley. The Association is known widely for growing and shipping citrus with brand labels such as "South Lake," "Goodwill," and "Fellowship."
Scope and Content
The records of the South Lake Apopka Citrus Growers Association include meeting minutes, shipping registers, and disbursements covering six decades in the history of the association. The minutes cover annual meetings as well as directors meetings, and they also include correspondence, resolutions, and financial information related to the meetings. The shipping and disbursements registers provide a detailed history of the financial and citrus producing operations. Several of the documents, particularly the meeting minutes, pertain to descendants of Sadler, Tilden, and the other founders, demonstrating the continued importance of these families in the Association.
