Finlayson and gravely wounded Purman on February 26, 1869 in Marianna, Fla. from Governor Reed and a biographical sketch of Purman written November 24, 1927.

- Papers, 1933-1975. Personal correspondence, speeches, business, and financial records from 1955 to 1973. These records document Caldwell's activities after his term as Florida Governor (1945-1949). There are also newspaper clippings from 1933 to 1962 on various subjects of interest to Caldwell, including events during his term as Governor. The clippings are pasted in old volumes of the Congressional Record.

The Florida House of Representatives Record Subgroup is comprised of correspondence, news clippings, and legislation files that document his political activities from 1929-1930. The United States Senate Record Subgroup includes correspondence, memoranda, notes, legislation sponsored and co-sponsored by Senator Pepper, speeches, committee files, reference materials, and official printed materials. The U.S. House of Representatives Record Subgroup contains materials generated by his Washington, D.C. and Miami offices. These include letters, committee files, speeches, campaign material, news clippings, legislation, and office files. The Personal Papers include Pepper's correspondence with his wife, Mildred, his parents, other family members and friends, speeches concerned with unofficial matters, and his school, personal business, and organizations.
