Biographical/Historical Note

Alonzo Brown Noyes was born October 4, 1813 in Essex, Massachusetts to Thomas and Mary Brown Noyes. For the years prior to and during the start of the American Civil War, he served as a Customs Collector and the Superintendent of Lights at St. Mark's, Florida. He also served as a major in the Confederate Army. He died December 2, 1876 in Fernandina, Florida.

Scope and Content

The bulk of the collection is composed of receipts, vouchers, freight lists, registers, abstracts of duties, accounts, and expenditure lists for the lighthouse and port in St. Marks, Florida. These papers are in nine folders, and are arranged chronologically. The remainder of the collection consists of correspondence addressed to Noyes. The majority of the letters concern receipts of items, duties, and day-to-day business of the lighthouse and port. Other subjects mentioned are smuggling, freight handling, travelling time for ships, and the Union blockade on southern shipping during the Civil War. The bulk of the material dates between 1861 and 1866.

The letters are arranged in six folders. Five of these folders are arranged by sender. These letters include: several sent by Christopher Gustavus Memminger, the Confederate Secretary of Treasury, and letters from Ebenezer Farrand, Augustus Steele, and T.S. Winn. The last folder of correspondence is arranged chronologically and contains miscellaneous authors. Although most of this correspondence is routine, it includes the thoughts and feelings of a Southerner after the Civil War. There is also a letter from Memminger to Noyes regarding the budget cuts needed in the South and a letter from T.S. Winn to Memminger about smuggling in Florida.
