Biographical/Historical Note

Fred Lorillard, Sr., was a member of the Lorillard family of Pennsylvania and related to Pierre Lorillard IV (1833-1901), an executive for Lorillard Tobacco Company, the oldest tobacco company in the United States. He married Esther Christunas and the couple split their time between Pennsylvania and Florida, occasionally residing in New York and New Jersey. Lorillard owned and operated an auto repairs shop and had a lifelong interest in aviation and motor car racing.

Scope and Content

The Lorillard photo albums contain nearly 500 photographs of Lorillard family members that are arranged chronologically and dated 1905-1945. These photos mainly are related to the family and friends of Fred Lorillard, Sr., from his early childhood on. Many photos pertain to the family's annual trips to Florida, where they engaged in hunting, fishing and boating excursions. The family also observed and participated in automobile races in Daytona. A substantial number of photos depict the family's main residence and their daily life in Pennsylvania. Other photos detail Fred's avid interest in aviation, and include pictures of Charles Lindbergh and George W. Haldeman. People frequently photographed and mentioned in photo captions include, Fred Lorillard Sr. and Esther Christunas Lorillard, along with Fred's siblings Ed, Arthur and Gertrude, his parents, and his son, Fred Jr. Fred and his brothers and sister were probably born in the 1890s or early 1900s and are shown as young children in the first album. Family friends also are included among the photos. An index listing the names of those people and places frequently depicted in the albums is provided as part of this document. The albums also contain a handful of newspaper clippings.
