Biographical/Historical Note

John A. Kirkpatrick was a planter based in Pensacola, Florida. He also was a member of the Florida State Horticultural Society. He grew, among other things, citrus trees, kiefer pear trees, pecans and plums. Kirkpatrick was adversely affected by the citrus freeze of 1895. He placed orders with Arcadia Nurseries, which was based in Monticello, Florida. According to the Florida Historical Society, Arcadia Nurseries was one of the largest pecan nurseries in the state.


Scope and Content

The Kirkpatrick Collection mainly consists of correspondence to John A. Kirkpatrick from J.H. Girardeau, the proprietor of Arcadia Nurseries. These letters are dated from 1894 to 1903 and are arranged chronologically by month and year. The collection also includes correspondence from Pomona Wholesale Nurseries, Interlachen Nurseries, and Glen St. Mary Nurseries. These letters are solicitations, receipts of orders and bills. The collection holds nursery catalogs and price lists, freight charges, letters from various stores that Kirkpatrick wrote to, along with miscellaneous items including order sheets, advertisements, and a small notebook with records of orders.
