Biographical/Historical Note

Historian E. Ashby Hammond was a professor at the University of Florida. Among his many publications are two biographical registers: The Medical Practitioners in Medieval England: A Biographical Register (with Charles H. Talbot) and The Medical Profession in 19th Century Florida: A Biographical Register.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of biographical summaries created by Hammond in preparing his book, The Medical Profession in 19th Century Florida: A Biographical Register. The materials are filed alphabetically by last name of the physician. The biographical sheets typically include a biographical summary, the type and/or place of employment, birth and death dates, and sources used to gather the information. There is one folder containing introductory materials, including documents entitled, "Physicians and Medical Practice in Nineteenth Century Florida," and "The Medical Profession in Florida, 1821-1874."
