Biographical/Historical Note
The East Florida Telephone and Telegraph Company was led by Mr. E.E. Voyle, an Englishman born in 1854 who emigrated to Florida in the 1870's to meet his brother Joseph Voyle, then the County Surveyor of Alachua County. He became an electrical engineer and gradually took charge of the company. E.E. Voyle sold the company to Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Co. in 1924 for $71,501.
Scope and Content
Includes minutes from the East Florida Telephone and Telegraph Co. (1904-1924), a ledger on the Gainesville Post Office (1867-1889), two minutes-books from the Gainesville Board of Trade (1886-1888), a ledger from Endel and Herman (clothiers-1882-1885), and the minutes of the Interstate Life Insurance Co. (1913-1915). Internal evidence and outside research have provided only limited information on the significance of the other ledgers, but they could still be useful to any researcher studying the Gainesville area and Florida businesses in these time periods.
