Record Group I

Record Group I contains records related to the various Chase business interests and includes the records of Chase and Company, the Chase Investment Company (Chase Groves, Inc.), and Indian River Citrus Fruits, Inc., as well as files on other investments and business associations. The record group is divided into seven series. Series 1 and 2 came from the 1978 accession and contain the business records of Sydney Octavius Chase and Joshua Coffin Chase, respectively. Series 3-7 originated from records in the second, third and fourth accessions. Series 3 is an artificial record series covering all facets of the Chase operations from 1903 to 1960. Series 4 consists of an alphabetical subject file found intact at the Belair estate supplemented by records from the third and fourth accessions. Series 5-7 contain bound records of Chase and Company, Chase Groves, and Indian River Citrus Fruits.

Series 1: Business Records of Sydney Octavius Chase, 1884-1934; bulk 1910-1934
13 linear feet (31 boxes)

Series 1 contains the business records of Sydney Octavius Chase and is divided into seven headings: Chase and Company, Florida Citrus Exchange, Trade Associations, Citrus Clearinghouse, Statistics, Business Interests, and Tung Operations. The Chase and Company files date from the early 1910s till 1934, but earlier records related to Chase and Company are filed under Business Interests. The Business Interests files include records related to Chase Investment and other groves that the Chases invested in. The Business Interest files also include records related to real estate ventures such as Fort Caswell, banking matters, and personal stock investments. Civic issues related to Sanford are also present. Topics include the Mediterranean Fruit Fly infestation, weather problems, and transportation. The latter occupies a large portion of all correspondence in Record Group I. Railroad rates are a major complaint and mention is made of a proposal to build a canal linking the Indian River and the St. Johns River and thereby reducing dependence on the railroads. The Florida Citrus Exchange records here and in Series 2 document the Chases' acrimonious and reluctant participation in that organization. The statistical records provide detail on prices at the local, state and national levels as well as costs related to production and distribution. The tung oil records document the operations at the Anderson and Jumpie Run plantations.

In the main, the order in Series 1 and 2 reflects the initial work done by Dena Snodgrass. The file numbers were those assigned at the time the collection was acquired in 1978. However, it is not altogether clear that the provenance of all the files was correctly identified at the time. This is particularly true of the statistical files which appear to have been generated by several people.

Series 2: Business Records of Joshua Coffin Chase, 1890-1941; bulk 1914-1941
14.2 linear feet (34 boxes)

Series 2 documents the business career of Joshua Coffin Chase. The series is divided into five headings: Chase and Company, Business Interests, Citrus Clearinghouse, Trade Associations, and Florida Citrus Exchange. Content is similar to Series 1, but this series appears to be far more complete. Joshua Chase was deeply involved with government agencies and trade organizations and was an advocate for the trade as exemplified in his fight against arsenic spraying. He also showed an interest in experimental ventures such as refrigeration. The files on the Citrus Clearinghouse, Florida Citrus Exchange, the Growers and Shippers League of Florida, and the American Fruit and Vegetable Shippers Association are much more extensive than those in Series 1. The records in this series came from the first accession with the exception of the last box. The contents of that box were found in the second accession and are confined to the years 1929-1931.

Series 3: Subject Files, 1903-1960; bulk 1920-1960
5 linear feet (14 boxes)

Series 3 is an artificial series created from records found primarily in the second accession. The records were poorly identified and appear to have come from multiple sources. It includes records of Sydney Octavius Chase, Joshua Coffin Chase, Sydney Octavius Chase, Jr. Randall Chase, Alfred Foster and William Justice Lee. To these were added audits donated by Cecilia Johnson and a few files from the fourth accession. Content is similar to records in series 1 and 2, but reflects the influence of the second generation as well. Of particular interest are the extensive files on the Mediterranean Fruit Fly campaign and the files related to weather events. The latter came from the files of Randall Chase donated in 2008.

Arranged alphabetically by subject.

See Series 10 for additional business correspondence of Sydney O. Chase, Jr.

Series 4: Subject Files, 1961-1984
35.5 linear feet (85 boxes)

Series 4 is arranged alphabetically by subject and consists of a subject file found at the Belair estate in 1990. The records were originally taken from the Sanford offices of Randall Chase and Sydney Octavius Chase, Jr. when it was closed in 1979. Audits from Cecilia Johnson and labor files found in Randall Chase's home were added to the series. The content of the series reflects all of the Chase business interests including Chase and Company and Chase Groves, Inc. successor to Chase Investment.

The series reflects the tremendous upheaval in the Florida fruits and vegetable industry in the 1960s and 1970s. The percentage of fruit destined for the juice plants increased as major firms constructed tank farms with large holding capacities thus allowing the processors to sell product off in an orderly manner in accord with market demand and prices. This also lessened the impact of freeze events as the processing capacity of the industry was able to manage larger quantities of damaged fruit. Another change was the shift southward of Florida's agriculture, particularly in citrus. Corporate farming also came to dominate Florida agriculture. Small growers, lacking the capital necessary to compete, sold out to larger interests just as some of the small to middle-sized packers were bought out by larger packers and processors. Chase and Company was no longer a large firm, relatively speaking, and in the changing Florida environment the investors had to choose between selling out or attempting to leap into the upper ranks of the larger businesses. These changes are clearly discernable in the Chase records for this period. The shutting down of the fresh fruit operation, the selling off of groves in the Sanford area, and the purchase of Indian River district groves in St. Lucie County are all evidence of the industry-wide trends. Chase and Company's entry into the Everglades region is also documented. Labor problems become a focal point of meetings and memoranda. Also included in these records are various buy-out proposals and evidence that the directors were considering a number of different financial and investment strategies to counteract inflation and rising labor costs.

Series 5: Chase and Company Records, 1914-1980
12 volumes

Chase and Company began operations in 1884, primarily as an insurance company, but quickly moved into agricultural operations.
