Stranded Steamer

Accompanying Caption Reads:
Front:  One of the sinks on Paines Prairie, showing the remains of old steamer, Gainesville, Fla.
Reverse:  This Prairie was a few years ago a Lake about 18 miles square, through an explosion which blew bottom out of a pond, the entire Lake drained down, leaving the Steamers stranded, one of which is shown in this View.  These drains are called Sink Holes.
[The artist James Calvert Smith sketched a picture of one such launch, noting in his account Micanopy that it lay abandoned in an arm of Payne's Prairie just south of Gainesville].
Scanning of this photo was funded by the E. Ashby Hammond Memorial Fund.
