Biographical/Historical Note

The story of the Chases in Florida began in 1878 when Sydney Octavius Chase (1860-1941), having read about orange groves in Scribner's Magazine, came to Florida from Philadelphia. His brother, Joshua Coffin Chase (1858-1948), joined him in 1884 and together they formed Chase and Company that year. The Chase brothers came to Florida at the right time for Florida citrus and at the right time for them as investment entrepreneurs. Strong family ties in the North provided them with financial backing for their ventures. Joshua left Florida in 1895 to work in the California citrus industry. He returned to Florida in 1904 and rejoined his brother. Another brother, Randall, remained in Philadelphia and augmented his brothers' finances when convenient. Sydney and Joshua were also important civic leaders who took part in community development, most notably in the City of Sanford. Both were elected to the Sanford city commission. They also supported the development of Rollins College, worked with the Florida Historical Society, and were the benefactors of numerous charities.

Chase and Company began as an insurance company and branched out to storage facilities and fertilizer sales. The latter was the beginning of the company's lucrative agricultural supply division which remained in operation throughout the existence of the company. Although citrus was the primary interest, the company also invested in other agricultural pursuits including celery in central Florida, tung oil production in Jefferson County, and winter vegetables and sugar cane in the Lake Okeechobee muck lands. The company was also involved in the peach business in Georgia and North Carolina. The company was incorporated in 1914, with the Chase brothers owning 75 percent of the stock, and reincorporated in 1948. A second generation of Chases began its involvement in the family operations when Sydney O. Chase, Jr. ( b. 1890) became a citrus buyer in 1922. He was later joined by his brother Randall who served as president of Chase and Company from 1948-1965. Outside the Chase Family, Alfred Foster, W. R. Harney, and William "Billy" Leffler figured prominently as company executives and investors. The company dissolved in 1979 when its principal assets were sold to Sunniland for $5.5 million.

The Chases' interest in citrus began when Sydney came to Florida and became associated with General Henry S. Sanford. The Chases would eventually own General Sanford's experimental farm, Belair, and the Chase family home in Sanford was located there. Over the years, the Chases invested in a number of citrus groves and owned others outright. In 1912, they organized the Chase Investment Company as a holding company for their farms. Initially, the company operated the Isleworth, Nocatee, Belair, and Kelly citrus groves as well as celery farms in Sanford. The company was renamed Chase Groves, Inc. in 1951. From time to time, Chase Investment was involved in real estate in Florida and North Carolina. The latter included Fort Caswell, a former military property that was held for a time and then sold. Unquestionably, the jewel in the Chase crown was the Isleworth grove at Windermere. Isleworth's four hundred lake-tempered acres carried the Chases through many difficult times. It proved to be the principal asset at the company's demise when it was sold to golf legend Arnold Palmer in 1984. Chase Groves dissolved that same year, 100 years after the founding of Chase and Company.

Scope and Content

The Chase Collection contains correspondence, industry statistics, maps, photographs, and business records such as corporate minutes and audits. The collection also contains genealogical information related to the Chase ancestry.

Some of the earliest materials showed evidence of research done by two historians hired by the Chases to write a history. Photocopies of documents and transcriptions of holographic materials were found in the files along with notes from the historians' research. These were removed from the collection whenever found, but more may exist.

Arrangement

The collection consists of four record groups and 12 records series. Record Group I documents the history of Chase and Company, the Chase Investment Company, and other affiliated companies as well as the general business interests of both generations of Chases. Record Group II consists of the personal papers of Sydney Octavius Chase, Joshua Chase and Sydney O. Chase, Jr. Record Group III contains photographs from the collection depicting both business and family life. Record Group IV is a collection of family historical materials and contains letters and other records dating back to the 18th century as well as genealogical material. However, the bulk of collection covers the one hundred year period, 1884-1984, of the Chase industries in Florida.

Processing Notes

The Chase Collection was received in four accessions. The first records were acquired in 1978 when thirty file drawers were delivered to the P. K. Yonge Library of Florida History. The records from the first accession constitute series 1-2, 8-9, and 11-12 in this finding-aid. An inventory of the file folders was made at the time and the contents of the cabinets were removed and boxed in the early 1990s. A finding-aid for the first accession, written by Dena Snodgrass, was published and disseminated by the George A. Smathers Libraries in 1990. However, the records were never placed in series order and no attempt was made to remove extraneous materials. The Snodgrass guide identified possible series and located their contents in the collection. This guide was supplemented by another created by Tim Petit in 1998 which attempted to locate materials in the first accession and associate them with records found in the second accession.

The second accession began in 1990 and consisted of files found in a mobile home at the Belair estate. After initial weeding, those records were transported to the University of Florida in 1991. A finding-aid for the second accession was created by Robert N. Lauriault in 1992. As with the first accession, no attempt was made to identify and discard insignificant records. Additions to the collection were made by Cecilia (Cela) Lasbury Johnson, granddaughter of Joshua Coffin Chase, in 1999. These supplemented series 3 and 4 primarily, but also included records for series 6 and 12. A simplified finding guide for the collection was created by Chris Baker in 2007 but it retained the folder order of the first accession and continued to describe the records of the second accession as a separate entity. In 2008, records from the home of Randall Chase were added to the collection by his children.

In 2009, a decision was made to amalgamate the collection and create one unified collection guide. In the process, appraisal of the collection resulted in the removal of substantial portions of the collection, primarily from the second accession. It was also decided to physically place the materials from the first accession in their proper series order. Text from the previous guides was used in the final finding-aid. Subsequently, it was discovered that the 1999 accession had not been included. These records appear in the finding-aid in their proper places in the finding-aid, but are stored separately in boxes 229-235.

Contents List

Record Group I

Record Group I contains records related to the various Chase business interests and includes the records of Chase and Company, the Chase Investment Company (Chase Groves, Inc.), and Indian River Citrus Fruits, Inc., as well as files on other investments and business associations. The record group is divided into seven series. Series 1 and 2 came from the 1978 accession and contain the business records of Sydney Octavius Chase and Joshua Coffin Chase, respectively. Series 3-7 originated from records in the second, third and fourth accessions. Series 3 is an artificial record series covering all facets of the Chase operations from 1903 to 1960. Series 4 consists of an alphabetical subject file found intact at the Belair estate supplemented by records from the third and fourth accessions. Series 5-7 contain bound records of Chase and Company, Chase Groves, and Indian River Citrus Fruits.

Series 1: Business Records of Sydney Octavius Chase (bulk: 1910-1934) 1884-1934

13.0 Linear feet
31 boxes

Series 1 contains the business records of Sydney Octavius Chase and is divided into seven headings: Chase and Company, Florida Citrus Exchange, Trade Associations, Citrus Clearinghouse, Statistics, Business Interests, and Tung Operations. The Chase and Company files date from the early 1910s till 1934, but earlier records related to Chase and Company are filed under Business Interests. The Business Interests files include records related to Chase Investment and other groves that the Chases invested in. The Business Interest files also include records related to real estate ventures such as Fort Caswell, banking matters, and personal stock investments. Civic issues related to Sanford are also present. Topics include the Mediterranean Fruit Fly infestation, weather problems, and transportation. The latter occupies a large portion of all correspondence in Record Group I. Railroad rates are a major complaint and mention is made of a proposal to build a canal linking the Indian River and the St. Johns River and thereby reducing dependence on the railroads. The Florida Citrus Exchange records here and in Series 2 document the Chases' acrimonious and reluctant participation in that organization. The statistical records provide detail on prices at the local, state and national levels as well as costs related to production and distribution. The tung oil records document the operations at the Anderson and Jumpie Run plantations.

In the main, the order in Series 1 and 2 reflects the initial work done by Dena Snodgrass. The file numbers were those assigned at the time the collection was acquired in 1978. However, it is not altogether clear that the provenance of all the files was correctly identified at the time. This is particularly true of the statistical files which appear to have been generated by several people.

Series 2: Business Records of Joshua Coffin Chase (bulk: 1914-1941) 1890-1941

14.2 Linear feet
34 boxes

Series 2 documents the business career of Joshua Coffin Chase. The series is divided into five headings: Chase and Company, Business Interests, Citrus Clearinghouse, Trade Associations, and Florida Citrus Exchange. Content is similar to Series 1, but this series appears to be far more complete. Joshua Chase was deeply involved with government agencies and trade organizations and was an advocate for the trade as exemplified in his fight against arsenic spraying. He also showed an interest in experimental ventures such as refrigeration. The files on the Citrus Clearinghouse, Florida Citrus Exchange, the Growers and Shippers League of Florida, and the American Fruit and Vegetable Shippers Association are much more extensive than those in Series 1. The records in this series came from the first accession with the exception of the last box. The contents of that box were found in the second accession and are confined to the years 1929-1931.

Series 3 is an artificial series created from records found primarily in the second accession. The records were poorly identified and appear to have come from multiple sources. It includes records of Sydney Octavius Chase, Joshua Coffin Chase, Sydney Octavius Chase, Jr., Randall Chase, Alfred Foster and William Justice Lee. To these were added audits donated by Cecilia Johnson and a few files from the fourth accession. Content is similar to records in series 1 and 2, but reflects the influence of the second generation as well. Of particular interest are the extensive files on the Mediterranean Fruit Fly campaign and the files related to weather events. The latter came from the files of Randall Chase donated in 2008.

Arranged alphabetically by subject.

See Series 10 for additional business correspondence of Sydney O. Chase, Jr.

Series 4: Subject Files 1961-1984

Series 4 is arranged alphabetically by subject and consists of a subject file found at the Belair estate in 1990. The records were originally taken from the Sanford offices of Randall Chase and Sydney Octavius Chase, Jr. when it was closed in 1979. Audits from Cecilia Johnson and labor files found in Randall Chase's home were added to the series. The content of the series reflects all of the Chase business interests including Chase and Company and Chase Groves, Inc., successor to Chase Investment.

The series reflects the tremendous upheaval in the Florida fruits and vegetable industry in the 1960s and 1970s. The percentage of fruit destined for the juice plants increased as major firms constructed tank farms with large holding capacities thus allowing the processors to sell product off in an orderly manner in accord with market demand and prices. This also lessened the impact of freeze events as the processing capacity of the industry was able to manage larger quantities of damaged fruit. Another change was the shift southward of Florida's agriculture, particularly in citrus. Corporate farming also came to dominate Florida agriculture. Small growers, lacking the capital necessary to compete, sold out to larger interests just as some of the small to middle-sized packers were bought out by larger packers and processors. Chase and Company was no longer a large firm, relatively speaking, and in the changing Florida environment the investors had to choose between selling out or attempting to leap into the upper ranks of the larger businesses. These changes are clearly discernable in the Chase records for this period. The shutting down of the fresh fruit operation, the selling off of groves in the Sanford area, and the purchase of Indian River district groves in St. Lucie County are all evidence of the industry-wide trends. Chase and Company's entry into the Everglades region is also documented. Labor problems become a focal point of meetings and memoranda. Also included in these records are various buy-out proposals and evidence that the directors were considering a number of different financial and investment strategies to counteract inflation and rising labor costs.

9.0 Linear feet
22 boxes

Series 9 contains personal files of Joshua Coffin Chase and includes both family correspondence as well as materials related to Chase's civic and private interests. Of note are the records related to his political interests, his activity as a bank director with Barnett Bank, and his charitable contributions. The latter included the Boy Scouts of America, Rollins College, and the Hungerford School, a school for African Americans in Eatonville. The series also reflects Chase's interest in family history. The last two folders in the series contain letters written by him to his daughter Cecilia Chase Lasbury and were donated by her daughter, Cecilia Lasbury Johnson.

Arranged alphabetically by subject.
