"Obit" Assignment In Special Collections

This assignment is for students in Prof. Steven Noll's Florida history class. You will be assigned the name of a person from Florida’s past. Your task will be to write an obituary notice about that person. It is due in to Prof. Noll on November 19.

The assignment requires you to use materials housed in Special Collections. The Special Collections Reading Room is on the second floor of George A. Smathers Library/Library East. Please note that all materials are non-circulating and that the Reading Room has limited hours. It is open Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are no weekend hours. Plan your time for this assignment accordingly.

Follow the following guidelines, as given by your professor:

"You are to write a two page single space obituary for the famous Floridian you have been assigned. Think of yourself as a newspaper writer, crafting this obituary for the general public. Please focus on the person’s accomplishments, paying special attention to their relationship to Florida. Spend minimal attention on the personal details of the person’s life (for example, you may mention spouse and children but the bulk of your obit should be about the person and their accomplishments). If you don’t know what an obituary format looks like, you can check the obituary page in a current newspaper."

"You must use at least one source from the PK Yonge Library of Florida History. That source must be listed at the bottom of your work. Also, you MUST sign the special sign-in sheet at the PK that is specifically for our class. You also may use Florida newspapers, which are to be found in microfilm form in Library West. Once again, please place the citation for that newspaper (name of paper, article name, and date of publication) at the bottom of your last page."

TOOLS YOU MAY NEED:

•  The card catalog. Florida history still has a traditional card catalog organized alphabetically by author, title, and subject. It’s a quick useful way to see if Special Collections holds any material about a particular person.
•  The biographical card index. At the end of the card catalog there are card files organized by name. If your individual is listed, the card will tell you where to find information about him or her.
•  The biography boxes. Behind the main desk in the Reading Room is a collection of boxes containing folders of information about famous Floridians. As the librarian at the desk to check the files to see if your person has a folder.
•  The index to the Florida Historical Quarterly. There is a full run of the Quarterly on the west wall of the Reading Room. Check the index volumes to see if anyone has published an article on the individual you were assigned.
•  Ask a librarian. If all else fails, get help from me or from one of the other staff in Special Collections.

USE OF MATERIAL. Special Collections holds non-circulating materials that are often rare or fragile. You should follow these rules when using material in Special Collections:

1.  Check in at the desk as soon as you enter the Reading Room.

2.  Make sure your hands are clean (free of dirt and oils) when handling materials.

3.  Do not use ink or marker near materials. Use a pencil.

4.  Keep your table clear of everything besides paper, pencil, or a laptop. Backpacks should be put away in the Reading Room lockers.

5.  Treat materials with respect. If you are using a letter collection, keep the letters in order. If you have a fragile item, handle it carefully.

6.  If you wish to photocopy an item, check first with the person at the desk.

7.  If you accidentally tear or damage an item, tell the person at the desk so we can make repairs.

8.  Return items to the person at the desk when you are done. You can place items on hold.

OTHER RULES

Do not bring food or drink into the Reading Room
Be considerate of others. There will be professors and graduate students doing research.

I will be happy to assist you with your assignment.
