Biographical/Historical Note
James de Vere Allen was born in Kenya in 1936. For most of his life he researched and taught others about Swahili culture, art and history. He was the author of several publications, most notably Swahili Origins: Swahili Culture and the Shungwaya Phenomenon (1993), which was published after his death on June 13, 1990.
