Biographical/Historical Note

Jack Rudloe was born in New York in 1943, moved to the Florida panhandle in 1957, and attended Florida State University. In 1964 he founded the Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory, an environmental education and research support center in Panacea, Florida, which provides marine life to schools and research laboratories throughout the nation. He participated in the International Indian Ocean Expedition to Madagascar, trips of the New York Zoological Society to Surinam to collect giant toadfish, and led deep sea trawling trips in the Gulf of Mexico to bring back giant sea roaches. Rudloe has conducted sea turtle research in conjunction with the Caribbean Conservation Corporation and the National Marine Fisheries Service. He has served on a National Cancer Institute advisory panel to review proposals on drugs from the sea. He has been active in fishery development and aquaculture projects, including an attempt to start a domestic fishery for cannonball jellyfish.

His books include The Sea Brings Forth, The Erotic Ocean, The Living Dock, Time of the Turtle, The Wilderness Coast, and The Search for the Great Turtle Mother. His articles have appeared in numerous magazines, and he has appeared on the NBC Today Show, Good Morning America, and National Public Radio. His conservation efforts in behalf of Florida wetlands and his writing career have been the subject of a Walt Disney television and a Florida Public Television documentary. Anne Eidemiller Rudloe was born in Virginia in 1947. She earned her bachelor's degree from Mary Washington College and a M.S. and a Ph.D. in biology from Florida State University. Her dissertation topic concerned the ecology and behavior of horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemous). She is the co-author with Jack of several popular periodical articles, as well as numerous scientific journal articles on horseshoe crabs, electric rays, sea turtles, and other topics. She has also participated in numerous scientific projects and taught at Florida State University.

More information about the professional activities and publications of both Anne and Jack Rudloe may be found on the Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory web page.

Scope and Content

The bulk of the papers represent Jack Rudloe's literary career, consisting of manuscripts, drafts, proof copies, and background material. Manuscript material is included for all Rudloe's published books, almost all of his articles, and for numerous book length and short unpublished writing. Rudloe recycled his unpublished writings and wrote on the same topics frequently. As a result, there may be overlap of the same or similar material in different places. Much of the material which exists in notes or rough drafts has never been published at all.

A smaller, but very significant, portion of the papers document his environmental activism, primarily in opposing wetland destruction in Wakulla County. There are a large number of papers relating to management practices of the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, also in Wakulla County. Other topics include sea turtles, which along with shrimping is a major topic of his writing, as well as jellyfish aquaculture, and coral management. Much of the Wakulla County material, found in the topical files, was recapitulated into an unpublished version of The Living Dock, included with the published book material.

The general papers include bio-bibliographical documents, literary and miscellaneous correspondence, and records from several Rudloe expeditions and his lecture engagements. A box of "special format" material is included. Correspondence relating to a particular writing or project may usually be found with those records, rather than in the General Correspondence files.

While the bulk of the papers are Jack Rudloe's, the work of Anne Rudloe is significantly represented in several ways. Many of the shorter writings were co-authored by Anne and Jack Rudloe. Even when not actively involved as a co-author, Anne participated in much of the research for the books and in other projects with Jack. In addition, the papers contain several examples of Anne Rudloe's own writings, both technical and literary.

Arrangement

The Papers are arranged in five parts: (1) General, (2) Books, (3) Short Writings (4) Unpublished Writings, and (5) Topical.

Rudloe frequently typed or printed copies on the verso of already used paper. These have been noted in the finding guide, when they seem significant. Possibly some of the versos may contain writings that are otherwise unrecognized.

Part II: Books 1965-1996 (bulk: 1968-1996)

Jack Rudloe's six published books are all represented in the papers in quantities ranging from draft fragments and proof copies of his earliest book, The Sea Brings Forth, to extensive documentation of later works. The manuscript that exists for his second book, The Erotic Ocean, is substantially different than the published text. Because of differences in manuscript and published versions, much of this manuscript material is unpublished. The early drafts of The Living Dock at Panacea, as explained below, were split into two books, only one of which was published. Only a small amount of the material that appears to have been gathered and written about Turtle Mother was actually used in Search for the Great Turtle Mother. Much of the remainder is either unpublished, or, in some cases, went into magazine articles.

Correspondence relating to a specific work may be found in this section, but a check of the correspondence in the General Papers may also be fruitful.

The "Books" are described as follows: The Sea Brings Forth (1968), The Erotic Ocean (1971), The Living Dock at Panacea (1977), The Wilderness Coast (1988), Time of the Turtle (1979), and Search for the Great Turtle Mother (1995). In addition to the two books on turtles, the Papers contain his and Anne's National Geographic article on turtles, a "turtle" subject file, and minor turtle references throughout.

The Living Dock at Panacea, 1977 - General: Synopses, outlines and notes

There are at least two major versions of this title, the published work which is a natural history of the waters around Panacea and Rudloe's dock, and an earlier version which is more of an account of his environmental conflicts in and around Panacea. He referred to the latter, called "The Passing of Panacea," as the "angry young man speaking out" version. This account corresponds in narrative form to much of the documentation in the Conservation files. The published version, according to Rudloe, combined nature chapters from "The Passing of Panacea," and chapters from another unpublished work called "Seasons of the Sea" (Correspondence, Letter to McIntosh and Otis, Dec. 5, 1974).

Box 4 includes papers which appear to relate primarily to the published work. The bulk, boxes five through seven, relate primarily to the "Passing of Panacea." Boxes eight and nine contain other writings and draft fragments that might relate to either version, or appear somewhat out of the scope of either. A page proof and other material relating to the Fulcrum reprint, The Living Dock (1988) is also found in box nine.

Part III: Short Writings: Magazine Articles, Chapters in Books, and Technical Reports 1961-1996

"Short Writings" primarily contain the manuscripts and related correspondence, notes, etc. of published magazine articles written by Jack Rudloe and often co-authored with Anne Rudloe. They also include two chapters from a book on the national parks and a technical report on netfishing. Unpublished writings, both short and book-length, are found in the Unpublished Writings section. The periodical articles are arranged in alphabetical order by the name of the magazine in which they appeared. Other writings are at the end. The Rudloe's have been most frequently published in National Geographic and Sports Illustrated. The most extensive part of this section is the turtle material for the Rudloes' 1994 National Geographic article on sea turtles. Their article on the Atchafalaya basin is also heavily documented. This material overlaps with related material in The Search for the Great Turtle Mother and to a lesser extent, Time of the Turtle. Turtle files may also be found in the Topical section of the papers. Articles that were reprinted in other magazines, such as Readers Digest, are filed with the periodical in which they first appeared.

Part IV: Unpublished Writings 1957-1997

Unpublished Writings include the artifacts of completed writings not published, fragmentary works, and ideas and notes for works contemplated, but never begun. They range in length from a single sheet bearing the idea for a project to multiple versions of full length books. In addition to Rudloe's non-fiction writings, the papers contain a major effort to create a novel and several lesser attempts at the fictional format. The oldest examples date back to Rudloe's high school, or even middle school years, but most represent his work as a professional author. As with the Short Writings, many of these pieces were, or intended to be co-authored with Anne Rudloe. This series also includes two full length manuscripts by Anne Rudloe.

Leon Foote was a pseudonym used on drafts of the "Benjamin County Stories" and Jim, a character recently moved from the north to Florida. Others are directly autobiographical and include experiences in high school, at Florida State University, especially the marine laboratory, incidents in the Florida Panhandle, biological collecting, and early experiences with the Gulf Specimen Company.

Potluck (Unpublished Novel): Also called Shrimper's Log and Easy Money Circa 1978-1988

Potluck, a complete novel exists in numerous versions and drafts written approximately over ten years. Its original title "Shrimper's Log," was conceived and begun as a non-fictional account of shrimping life, for which a contract was signed with Viking Press. Along the way, Rudloe became interested in writing a novel, centering on drug smuggling by shrimp fisherman, and the germ of the narrative became incorporated into a novel, later called "Easy Money," and finally "Potluck." Versions are identified here as "Shrimper's Log (ca. 1978), "Easy Money, (ca.1980), Potluck I (ca. 1983), and Potluck II (ca. 1988). Cf. letter to Corliss M. Smith, Viking, July 2, 1980 (Box 7, folder #3).

Part V: Topical Files 1966-1995

The major component of the Topical files is the conservation files (8 boxes). Other major subjects include the turtle files (2 cubic foot boxes) and the Coral Management Plan (two boxes). One box of miscellaneous topics features Anne Rudloe's research and writings on the electric ray. The heart of the conservation files is six boxes relating, with few exceptions, to Rudloe's environmental activism in Wakulla County and adjacent areas. Major topics include efforts to prevent dredging in Dickerson Bay, to stop development of a marina on the bay, and efforts to prevent development of Fiddler's Point. One box relates to the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. Two boxes of conservation files represent Rudloe's association with various environmental groups and agencies as well as including some general environmental documentation.

The turtle files include a variety of turtle information, illustrating the efforts of Rudloe and others in turtle conservation, as well as general turtle biology. Some of the documents are original, while others are secondary sources that served to inform Rudloe's turtles writings. The coral management plan derives from a consultanship to survey markets for imported coral. There is also a small group of papers based on a report on aquaculture prepared by the Rudloes.
