This series contains a comprehensive collection of materials relating to the Community Areas Management Programme for Indigenous Resources (CAMPFIRE) in Zimbabwe. Born out of wildlife legislation passed in Rhodesia in the 1970s, the program was officially conceived by Rowan Martin in the early 1980s. Brian Child was the coordinator of the CAMPFIRE program from 1989-1995. Overall program guidelines, correspondence, publicity, and a series of papers by Brian Child are included in this series. The bulk of this series contains documents relating to individual communities throughout Zimbabwe and the formation of district councils which began coordinating CAMPFIRE programs independently within their own jurisdictions. Documents from these multiple district councils' (DCs) are included throughout this series. There is also information about the United States-funded Natural Resource Management Program (USAID-NRMP), which provided financial assistance in Zimbabwe in the early 1990s. The series documents Graham Child's occupation as an officer with the Rhodesia/Zimbabwe Department of National Parks and Wildlife Management. Many manuscripts relating to Zimbabwe Wildlife, both biological and sociopolitical, are available in this series. Of particular note are a group of reports, memos and policy documents prepared by Graham Child covering a wide range of topics and spanning the 1970s and 1980s. Information about wildlife legislation from both Rhodesia and Zimbabwe are found in this series including a 1980 address by Robert Mugabe to a Conservation Congress and extensive notes from the Minister of National Parks and Wildlife Management. This series covers numerous topics such as elephant population management, the ivory trade, fisheries management, and literature on the habits and recreation at Lake Kariba and Lake McIlwaine (now known as Lake Chivero). Particularly of interest is the 'Folio Lists' folder found in Box 25, which contains a detailed lists of reports and memos written by Graham Child that are located throughout the series. A variety of Zimbabwe-related literature on flora, fauna, and the environment that would have been topical during Graham's tenure at the Department has also been included in this series. This series contains some of Brian Child's early research in the field of game ranching and includes the most comprehensive series of works authored by Brian Child. This collection includes much of Brian Child's formative work and contains research and data that would have been relevant to his work at Oxford University, including some information relevant to his Ph.D. on wildlife utilization. This series also includes related literature on Zimbabwe wildlife, game ranching and wildlife management that is not written by either Graham or Brian Child. Of note in this series is an extensive questionnaire and survey that was administered in the mid-1980s to game farm operators and wildlife managers in Zimbabwe - the raw data and analyses of the data are included. Furthermore, extensive information about NP9 forms are found in this collection. These National Parks and Wildlife Management forms list animals that are hunted and whether or not they are trophy exports and their estimated value primarily for foreign clients. This series contains materials concerning Brian Child's research in Zambia. After the implementation of CAMPFIRE in Zimbabwe, a similarly-modeled program was developed in neighboring Zambia. Based on previous research done in Zimbabwe, several community-based wildlife initiatives were established in Zambia. For six years, Brian Child was the technical advisor for a project to reorganize the management and finances of the South Luangwa National Park, known as the Luangwa Integrated Resource Development Project. This series contains specific information regarding the inception, implementation, and analyses of this and other similar programs. Also included is broader information about wildlife in the Zambian context as well as relevant government documents. This series is arranged alphabetically, and files on the same topic (e.g., Luangwa Integrated Research Development Project) are sub-arranged chronologically.

This series contains a chronology of manuscripts concerning the Bechuanaland Protectorate and, after 1966, the Republic of Botswana. Graham Child was influential in researching wildlife and wildlife economy in the newly independent Botswana. Many of Graham Child's published works on Botswana are included in this collection in addition to literature on flora and fauna, wildlife and economics, and a complete series of manuscripts from the 1971 Botswana Society Conference on Sustained Production. Many of the articles specifically published about Botswana are found in this collection in the series titled Works of Graham and Brian Child. There are also several maps relating to the early development of national parks in Botswana that are found in the Miscellaneous series along with other Botswana maps. This series is arranged chronologically.

This series includes material related specifically to protected areas, such as wildlife parks, as well as conservation strategies. Much of this material is similar in nature to other material found in the series for Non-Governmental Organizations. This material, however, deals specifically with the management and development of national parks and protected areas. The materials in this series also allow for comparisons between protected area policies in multiple nations across Africa, and include documents relating to the World Parks Congress held in 2003 in Durban. Noteworthy in this series are multiple documents concerning a conservation-themed work entitled "Wildlife and People: the Zimbabwe Success" by Graham Child. Also by Graham Child are a series of papers relating to the themes of protected area management and wildlife conservation. This series is arranged alphabetically.

This series includes materials concerning Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) aside from the CAMPFIRE project and Brian Child's work in Zambia. Included in these series are articles concerning CBNRM throughout the continent, Non-governmental organization conferences and workshops on CBNRM, as well as related published literature. The series is arranged alphabetically.

This series includes a wide range of material concerning tourism, primarily in Zimbabwe and Southern Africa, but also includes Graham Child's collection of tourism research throughout other parts of the world. The series includes comparative research papers, lecture notes, reports, and a variety of tourism brochures from both Zimbabwe and abroad.

This series contains a variety of materials on the topic of sustainability throughout the world, with documents from across Africa and Australia. Especially important in this series are documents relating to elephant and rhinocerous conservation, as well as information about the debates regarding elephant culling, poaching, and the ivory trade. Many of the documents in this series relate to CITES (Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species) and IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) and are complementary to other documents found in the series dealing with Non-Governmental Organizations. This series is arranged alphabetically.

This series contains a broad assortment of documents on semi-arid (savanna) habitats and the fauna, particularly mammals, found within those environments. Much of this material is similar in nature to the flora and fauna articles found in the Miscellaneous series of this collection. Special topics, such as desertification and semiarid habitats are mentioned in these documents, as well as a group of manuscripts concerning rangeland management with a particular focus on the challenges of managing semiarid environments. The material in this series is arranged alphabetically.

Although not as extensive as their work in other Southern African nations, this series contains items covering a range of topics about Namibia. Nature conservancy, governmental policy, tourism, and non-governmental organization activities are amongst the c topics covered in this series. A Namibian Community-Based Natural Resource Program, Living in a Finite Environment, is highlighted in this series. Correspondence between the Namibian Government and the U.S. Government concerning the importation of African elephant sport-hunted trophies is related to Graham Child's work on the ivory trade and endangered species. This material predominately dates from the 1990s. This series is arranged alphabetically.

Throughout their careers, both Graham and Brian Child developed international reputations as wildlife consultants and conservation strategists. This series contains materials concerning wildlife and conservation outside of Southern Africa - largely focusing on Northern and Eastern Africa, the Middle East, Canada, and Southeast Asia. Much of the related literature in this series is similar in nature to the research being conducted by both Childs in Zimbabwe. Additionally, much of this work was grouped by Graham Child under the heading 'Consultancies' - largely focused on his work in Saudi Arabia following his tenure at The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Management. Particularly noteworthy in this series are documents concerning CBNRM in Asia, Brian Child's first consultancy in Kenya, as well as examples of Wildlife Legislation internationally. This series is arranged alphabetically.

This series is a grouping of material pertaining to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that featured prominently in the work of both Graham and Brian Child. Although work relating to NGOs is found throughout this entire collection, this series contains documents pertaining to conferences, presentations and research objectives of various NGOs. Most notable in this series is the Convention on International Trades in Endangered Species (CITES), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) - all of which benefitted tremendously from the work of Graham and Brian Child. Of note is the serial entitled "Sustainable" - a newsletter of the IUCN - as well as a series of documents related to a 1986 'World Commission on Environmental Development' event held in Harare. This series provides a look at comparative wildlife conservation between Southern Africa and other parts of the world. This series is arranged alphabetically.

Throughout the latter-half of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century, Graham and Brian Child have been prolific scholars with a great many publications and consultancies between them. Most of their published works are included throughout the collection, as indicated by items preceded with asterisks (**). This series contains items published by Graham and Brian Child that are not included in other parts of the collection. Particularly of interest to the researcher are a list of earlier (circa 1980) bibliographies that list the extensive works by Graham Child as well as his contemporaries throughout the world. Graham Child's Ph.D. is also included in this series. This series is arranged alphabetically.

This series contains materials relating to the lives and careers of Graham and Brian Child. There are course notes from Graham's study at the University of Cape Town and Brian's study at the University of Zimbabwe. Included is a diary of Brian Child, some general correspondence of Graham Child, as well as an extensive list of contacts grouped together in Graham Child's address book. There are a couple of media articles highlighting the Childs' research, as well as a story involving a near-fatal plane crash involving Graham Child in 1987. This series is arranged alphabetically.

This series includes reprints largely related to the flora and fauna of Southern Africa. Although some similar articles are found in other places throughout the collection, this series focuses on specific animal groups that populate the habitats that are the focus of both Graham and Brian Child's research. Some of these articles date back from the first years of the 20th century. Additionally, the series includes Zimbabwe/Rhodesia government reports on topics such as the cattle industry and agriculture, as well as Zimbabwe NGOs such as The Property Association and The National Museums. A few documents concerning natural resources and economic development have also been included in this series (e.g., an article by Brian Child about maize marketing and documents by the Tribal Trust Land Development Corporation). This series is arranged alphabetically.

Both Graham and Brian Child created or collected maps that detailed specific tracts of land and regions where wildlife research was being conducted. Amongst the maps in this series are those relating to Tsetse control in Rhodesia, and several maps related to early creation and formation of National Parks in Botswana-including maps of areas that would become Chobe National Park and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. These maps are oversized and some are companions to data elucidated in other parts of this collection. Although many of Brian and Graham's maps have been separated from this collection andcatalogued in the UF general collections, maps that are too fragile or are rare are retained in this series. Note that many smaller maps or folding maps have been kept in their original folders throughout this collection. This series is arranged alphabetically by folder.
