Lillian Smith Papers
Series 1: Manuscripts
1944 - 1966
7 Boxes; 3 feet

Scope and Content: Includes typescripts and proofs from four of Lillian Smith's books, Strange Fruit (1944), Killers of the Dream (1949), The Journey (1954), and Our Faces, Our Words (1964), a copy of a speech given at the University of Florida, an autobiographical sketch (1954?), and  letters to Earl Miers and Bill Targ of World Publishing.

A box of supplemental papers (Box 7), not from the papers deposited by Lillian Smith, has been added to the Papers. Most of this material derives from assistance given by Marjorie White, a childhood friend of Smith's in Jasper, to researchers Louise Blackwell and Joan Titus. Blackwell co-authored Lillian Smith (Twayne Publishers, 1971) with Frances Clay. Publication data of Joan Titus's work is unknown. The material includes letters by both Smith and her colleague Paula Snelling.
