Says that as soon as they left Rochester, the Beebes appear to be moving
there. Briefly describes Rochester life. The bulk of the letter is a description
of the Rawlings's new life in Florida. Explains why they left Rochester.
Describes aspects of their life as citrus growers, the hazard Mediterranean
fruit fly, their pets, the character and speech of the Crackers and of
the blacks. Refers to the biographical sketch ["Blood of My Blood"] that
she submitted to the Atlantic. Mentions Alberta Boucher, apparently
a mutual friend [in Rochester?]
This is the earliest known Rawlings letter from Florida and perhaps
her earliest account of Florida life.

"as they are." Says bringing children into the world is undesirable because
of poor chances for happiness. Says "everything in the bean story
is true," apparently based upon her and Charles's experience.

is shocked that Bert Cooper used the church for personal reasons.

Had a disagreement with Norton over acquiring more cats. She gave initially
in, but then Benny was killed, so she acquired a new cat, "Uki," from the

Says she went to Fisk University and stayed with president Johnson and
his wife. Says "she shed the last trace of racial prejudice," etc.

also rejected. The book has changed considerably. Idella was anxious to
leave New York.

Thanks her for record. She was happy to get Bibb lecttuce seed. She
had hoped to finish the book in New York this past fall, but couldn't.
She did not leave New York until almost Chrtistmas and had a terrifying
ride home through ice and sleet. In despair, because she can't make the
book come out right.

Now that she if finished with the book, the "mixed critical reaction
does not disturb" her. Doubts she can give talk at Chapel Hill in the spring.
She has undertaken to wrote a biography of Ellen Glasgow. Thanks for Berenson
book.

Her schedule is heavy, between research and engagments with Glasgow's friends.
She is working closely with James B. Cabell.
With this is a note, signed CPL, 2/22/88 saying that MKR had visited
them on her way home. She was troubled and disturbed by what she had learned
about Glasgow "as a person."
