Autobiography:

There are two, or more, versions of Alden's biography. The "short version," is a complete typed version for which there is no holograph, covering his life until the time of World War I. The longer version covers until approximately the beginning of WWII. There are at least two versions of parts of it. Different versions exist for some chapters, and there is a repetition of chapter numbers. Internal references indicate the "Autobiography" was written in the 1960's. The envelopes in which some of the chapters were found, if they were used for the original mailing to his typist, bear a postmarks from 1969. One of these envelopes (Cf. "The Hatches") also may indicate that this was intended to be the opening chapter, although it is labeled as number two. A letter from Elliott W. Schryver (Box 5/73) refers to a manuscript entitled "The Hatches."
