Series 5: Audio-Visual Materials, 1971-1979 3 boxes, 1 linear foot
|
|
The audio-visual materials include: (1) cassette tapes documenting field work and interviews conducted by Dr. Elmendorf and
her assistants; (2) recordings of several conferences attended by Dr. Elmendorf; (3) a series of slides; and (4) transcription
of tapes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6. Dr. Elmendorf labelled the first two tapes as A and B. They have been renumbered as 1 and 2. Tapes
1 - 35 cover the main research conducted by Elmendorf for her dissertation. The list was compiled by Dr. Elmendorf herself
from the notes on the labels of the tapes. Tapes 36 - 67 cover various field visits to Chan Kom from 1972 - 1981. Tapes 68
- 76 are interviews with other academics, or are notes for various papers written by Dr. Elmendorf. Tapes 77 - 79 do not have
labels, but the list reflects what is actually heard on the tapes. Tapes 80 - 87 were recorded at the Interamerican Commission
of Women - Office of American States and the Interamerican Indian Institute (INI) Conference in Guatemala City in 1973. Tapes
88 - 92 were recorded at the Special Seminar on Women and Science in the American Continent held in Mexico City in 1973 and
sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Sessions from two separate days recorded on several
tapes (one set of labels is written in pencil and one set in green ink). Tapes 89 - 92 were recorded at the IX International
Conference of Anthropology and Ethnology Session (ICAES) in Chicago, 1973. Tapes 96 - 98 were recorded at various conference
and are labeled accordingly. The slides were taken in Chan Kom during 1974, 1976, and 1979. They cover many aspects of Mayan
life, including a series, taken by Brigette Jordan, of a midwife participating in a traditional Mayan birth.
