Series 1: Mayan Women in Chan Kom, 1967-1979, 1945-1994 (bulk 1971 - 1978) 9 linear feet (16 boxes)

The Series is based on three [separate] projects: 1. Mayan Women and Change (1971-1975), Elmendorf's dissertation research. 2. Socio-Economic Impact of Development in Chan Kom: 1971-1976 with Deborah Merrill Sands. 3. Behavior among Mayan Women (1977-1979), a larger project conducted in collaboration with Alfonso Villa Rojas and others. Related audio tapes and slides are included in the Audio-Visual series (no.5).
In 1967, Dr. Elmendorf returned to academics to pursue her Ph.D. in Anthropology. She conducted her field research in Chan Kom, Yucatan, Mexico, under the direction of Alfonso Villa Rojas, with whom she had collaborated while serving as director of CARE in Mexico. The research concentrated on women's roles in social change. Dr. Elmendorf completed her dissertation, "Mayan Women and Change," in 1972. The dissertation was first published in 1972 by Ivan Illich at CIDOC as a case study to use in his seminar on Quality of Life. The Mexican Ministry of Education published a Spanish version of the dissertation, La Mujer Maya y el Cambio, that same year and distributed it to public schools and libraries throughout Mexico. In 1976, the dissertation was edited to become Nine Mayan Women: A Village Faces Change. See "Mayan Women and Change, 1971-1975" (boxes 1 and 2) for more information. Between 1976 and 1978, Dr. Elmendorf, with her former student from Hampshire College, Deborah Merrill, returned to conduct research in Chan Kom. The study was funded by the World Bank. The research was designed to analyze the impact of various development projects from 1971 to 1976, and was based on previous research conducted by Elmendorf and Merrill. The resulting paper "Socio-Economic Impact of Development Projects in Chan Kom, 1971-1976," was presented at the 1978 Annual Meeting of the Society for Applied Anthropology in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. See "Socio-Economic Impact of Development in Chan Kom: 1971-1976" (boxes 3 and 4) for more information. Between 1977-1979, Dr. Elmendorf and Alfonso Villa Rojas conducted applied research in Chan Kom and elsewhere in Yucatan on issues of fertility determinants among the Maya and on socio-economic variables affecting the determinants. The variables included contact with the outside world, the level of education, value of the children, and the acceptance of new technologies into the family. Brigette Jordan, Deborah Merrill and several Mexican colleagues, including Hilaria Mass Coli, assisted in the field research. Support was provided by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). This project resulted in numerous papers, one of which, "Changing Role of Maya Mothers and Daughters," was ultimately published in Women and Technological Change in Developing Countries (1979) and another, "Anita: A Mayan Peasant Woman Copes," in Studies in Family Planning (Nov./Dec. 1979). See "Behavior Among Mayan Women, 1977-1979" (boxes 5-16) for more information.

Mayan Women and Change, 1971-1976

Papers in this project include manuscripts, publications, correspondence, and notes and notebooks related to Elmendorf's dissertation, "Mayan Women and Change." In addition to notes for and versions of the dissertation, there are manuscripts of several other papers discussing women's roles in social change that are based on the Mayan Women research. Several of these papers were presented at various conferences attended by Dr. Elmendorf between 1971 and 1973. Research for "Mayan Women and Change" was conducted on repeated field trips to Chan Kom between March, 1971, and July, 1972, is recorded in the field notes and other notes. The paper entitled "The Role of Women as Agents for Peaceful Social Change" contains the preliminary problem statement for Dr. Elmendorf's dissertation. The dissertation itself "demonstrated how women sacrificed, cooperated and planned strategies to survive better and/or maintain traditions they valued." It was presented to the Union Graduate School in June, 1972. An abstract of the dissertation was presented at the Ninth Annual International Conference of Anthropology and Ethnology (ICAES) in Chicago, 1973, and was published in 1975 as a chapter in the book Women Cross-culturally: Change and Challenge, edited by Ruby Leavitt. Included in the folder with "Mayan Women and Change" (1972) are several letters and prefaces added to the dissertation to create Nine Mayan Women, published in 1976. Also included with this section is a collection of correspondence, dealing with the dissertation topic and proposal. Also related to the research in Chan Kom are a series of cassette tapes of personal interviews conducted by Dr. Elmendorf between 1971 and 1972. There are approximately 39 tapes documenting the opinions and beliefs of the Mayas of Chan Kom. Dr. Elmendorf also recorded several conferences she attended during 1973. For more information on these tape, see the Audio-Visual series (no. 5).

Socio-Economic Impact of Development in Chan Kom: 1971-1976, with Deborah Merrill (1971-1978)

In 1976, Mary Elmendorf traveled to Chan Kom with her former student from Hampshire College, Deborah Merrill. The World Bank funded the six week stay in Chan Kom. The purpose of their visit was to conduct research to determine the impact of several development projects over a five year period, 1971-1976, on the lives of men and women in the village. The study is based, in part, on research conducted by Elmendorf and Merrill prior to 1971. Comparisons were made to baseline data gathered during their previous visits to Chan Kom. Three versions of the text are included: "Socio-Economic Impact of Development in Chan Kom - 1971-1976: Rural Women Participate in Change"; "Socio-Economic Impact of Development in Chan Kom - 1971-1976: Rural Women Participate in Change - A Preliminary Study"; and "Socio-Economic Impact of Development in Chan Kom - 1971-1976: Rural Women Participate in Change - An Executive Summary." Collectively, these papers provide (1) a description of Chan Kom and its social, political, and economic organization (including patterns predominant prior to 1971); (2) A discussion of development projects: a new road, establishment of bus services, electricity, running water, a cooperative store, a health clinic, and an agricultural extension station; (3) A discussion of changes in family structure, marriage and family, housing and population; (4) a discussion of changes relating to income producing activities; (5) and a discussion of changes in the role of women. After completion of the project, Elmendorf and Merrill were invited to submit their text for publication in Human Organization. The collection includes correspondence with the publishers and revisions of the text based on their comments. However, time constraints and other commitments kept Elmendorf and Merrill from being able to edit the paper to the editor's satisfaction, and the paper was never published. Also related to the research in Chan Kom are a series of cassette tapes recording the personal interviews conducted by Dr. Elmendorf, Deborah Merrill and Brigette Jordan between 1976 and 1979. There are approximately 27 tapes documenting the opinions and beliefs of the Mayas of Chan Kom. (For more information on these tapes see the Audio-Visual series, no. 5.).

Behavior Among Mayan Women, 1977-1979

In 1977, Mary Elmendorf, with the collaboration of Alfonso Villa Rojas of Mexico, began the project titled "Behavior among Mayan Women." The project was sponsored by the Research Institute for the Study of Man (RISM) and funded by the Office of Population, Bureau for Development Support, Agency for International Development (AID). The ultimate purpose of the study was to detail how the Mayan women of Chan Kom view family planning and how they handle the cultural constraints and supports. The project was designed to "(1) augment the basic knowledge of changing roles and status of women in fertility behavior in relation to education/learning and female employment/ economic opportunities; and (2) provide basic information for implementing an improved module for a maternal/child health/family planning service." The final write-up of the project resulted in several papers by different authors; therefore there is some duplication in the material. The field work consisted of six months in Yucatan studying the (1) changing roles and status of women, (2) household economy and the contributions of men, women and children, (3) spatial mobility, including migration patterns and how they relate to education, work and world views, and (4) communication and decision-making of couples. Both Elmendorf and Villa Rojas had previously conducted research in the Yucatan area and had established a series of relationships and contacts. Villa Rojas conducted research in three additional villages, one of which was Piste, providing limited material for comparative data. The paper titled "Behavior among Mayan Women in the Yucatan Peninsula in Relation to Demographic and Technological Change" provides an in-depth discussion of the project itself, including the methodology, participants and resulting papers. Several papers were prepared for seminars or conferences. "Changing Patterns of Fertility" was presented at the Society for Applied Anthropology in 1980. "Changing Family Structures and Development: Impact on the Child" was prepared for the conference of the Midwest Association for Latin American Studies, Michigan State University, October 1979. "Changing Roles and Status of Maya Mothers and Daughters" was prepared for the annual meeting of Society for Applied Anthropology, March 1979. And finally, "Changing Roles of Mayan Women in the Home and in the Market Place" was presented at the First Mexican/Central American Symposium on Research about Women, Mexico City, Mexico, in November, 1977. Related to the fertility project are a series of slides taken between 1971 and 1979. A set of slides of a traditional Mayan birth was taken by Brigette Jordan. (For more information, see the Audio-Visual series, 5.).
