Series 18 contains copies
of cables received and sent by the Cable Dept. of the Czarnikow-Rionda
Company. Copies of each cable were made and distributed to appropriate
company personnel and another copy was filed in the Cable Department. The
company had only a few cable addresses, and most of the thousands of cables
received each year were sent from or received by an address called Main.
The Main file consisted overwhelmingly of routine cables on the daily market
situation. However, a few cable messages related to the economic
and political situation in Cuba, as well as more serious company matters,
were interspersed in the Main files.
The cables in this
series come from file headings that contained a significant number of informative
messages as well as substantive cables culled from the Main files and,
beginning in 1960, the Miscellaneous files. A complete run of Main cables
for 1957 was also retained to provide a profile of sugar market operations
in a typical year. In general, the series reflects the turmoil of
the times and the company's early efforts to cope with the loss of its
primary business activity.
