ROTC members are shown in drilling and training exercises on the field next to the Stadium building. One of the officers explains that ROTC students don’t experience the antagonism from other students as they did in the past and that they are more readily accepted. As a consequence enrollment in the program has gone up. The UF ROTC program is the second in the eastern U.S. with the number of cadets commissioned as second lieutenants.

Jon Mills, the head of the Center for Governmental Responsibility and over twenty legal researchers have worked for a year researching which will aid in identifying the most pressing problems in the state Constitution. Jon Mills mentions some of these. When they are finished the revisions will not go to the legislature for a vote but will go directly to the ballot.

In response to the problem of salt water intrusion especially along Florida’s coastlines Dr. Bent Christensen, a professor of civil engineering, has developed a model in his lab which mimics the conditions of salt water intrusion. The model can speed up the process by doing in a few hours what might take a year along the coast. Dr. Christensen suggests that the state needs a long range plan to effect a balance.

Dr. Robert Walker, a chemical engineer, is working with surfactants (detergents) in order to find a more efficient method of extracting a larger percentage of oil. By increasing the amount of oil then the U.S. might be able to reduce the amount of foreign oil imports.
