Biographical/Historical Note

Budd Udell was born on April 4, 1934 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Early on, he had an interest in music and by high school he was studying the clarinet. He also formed a dance band which played at local events. He received a Bachelor's degree in Music from Indiana University in 1957. From 1958 to 1961 he was the Composer and Arranger for the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C. From 1962 to 1963 he was the Assistant Director of Bands at Indiana University, where he obtained a Masters in Music Education degree in 1965. From 1963 to 1970 he was the Director of Bands and a faculty member at West Virginia University. In 1972 he earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Composition from the University of Cincinnati's College Conservatory of Music (CCM), after which he served as Assistant Dean until 1974. He was executive secretary of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) from 1974 to 1977. In 1977 he came to the University of Florida and served as chair of the Music Department. He returned to the classroom in 1985 to serve as Area Coordinator of Theory and Composition and Graduate Coordinator and Advisor. He served as President of the Florida Association of Schools of Music from 1981 to 1983 and as President of the Florida State Music Teachers Association from 1985 to 1987. Budd Udell had a great interest in conducting and from 1981-1991 and then again from 1996-2004 he was the Music Director and Conductor of the Gainesville Civic Chorus. Udell composed many works, some of which were performed in concerts locally. One in particular, "Judgment" was performed on February 3 and 4, 1978 as part of the month long President's Seventh Annual Festival of Music. In an interview with the composer at the time of the concert, Udell expressed the similarity in the creative part of composing and in directing an academic department. One of his compositions heard regularly on the University of Florida campus is "Florida Chimes." This is the tune which sounds each quarter hour from the UF carillon. From 2001 to 2002 Udell was the interim chair of the new UF Department of Theatre and Dance. He retired in the year 2002. Budd Udell passed away on February 3, 2006 due to complications from pulmonary fibrosis.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of approximately twenty-one musical scores, most of which were original compositions as well as some arrangements by Budd Udell. The musical scores were created using the Ozalid process, which was a process to print positive images on paper from patterns - in this case, musical scores. The pages are large and measure 36 cm x 28 cm or 55 cm x 36 cm. The paper used for the ozalid process was apparently a diazo compound coated paper, and that is probably what these sheets are made of.
