Biographical/Historical Note
Welaka Preserve is a property leased by the State of Florida from the U.S. Government in 1930, administered by various Federal projects of the New Deal era and by the University of Florida. The preserve has been known as the Welaka Forestry and Wildlife Conservation Project, the University of Florida Conservation Reserve, Welaka, and the Welaka Research and Education Center. The University's affiliation with the Welaka center ended in the late 1980s.
Scope and Content
Series 84 is an incomplete record set of the Welaka Research and Education Center. The series is most complete for the period 1940-1954 and contains annual reports, budgets, and correspondence relating to all camp functions. Of special note are detailed records of logging operations, current wage scales by occupation, as well as files on quail breeding, ostrich breeding and storax collecting, illustrating the Camp Superintendant's experimental attempts to augment and exploit the preserve's resources.
