Biographical/Historical Note
Prior to 1932, the faculty of the University of Florida and its predecessor, the Florida Agricultural College in Lake City, assembled periodically to discuss and act on matters of general interest to the university. The assembly appointed various committees and subcommittees to deal with student discipline, athletics, the academic calendar, and other matters. The assembly's legislative duties were abolished in 1932 when a faculty senate was created. (See Series 78.) The faculty body continued to meet three times a year "to permit group contact and group instruction" (University Constitution of 1929 as amended to 1932) until sometime in the 1950s.
Scope and Content
The series consists of three bound volumes containing minutes and agendas, progress reports of the various committees, several official letters of condolence, and letters to and from the assembly. Of particular interest is the address of President Murphree to the assembly, founding new university policies and setting high goals for the future.
Volume 1 contains the minutes of the faculty for March 24-June 2, 1890. These are followed by General Orders (i.e., cadet regulations) and Special Orders for October 4, 1890-June 5, 1891. The imposition of military discipline is noted in the records. Volume 2 begins on October 16, 1896 and notes that the outgoing secretary had not turned over the previous volume. No minutes exist for academic years 1891-1895.
