Biographical/Historical Note

Superseding the General Assembly of the Faculty (See Series 81) in 1932, the University Senate was chartered as "the supreme legislative body of the University." Whereas the General Assembly included all faculty and administrative personnel, the University Senate consisted of administrators, deans or directors of University colleges and departments, and elected representatives with the rank of assistant professor or above. The president of the University served as Senate chair. Over the years, the function of the Senate has changed very little, but the membership has been altered several times. Faculty membership was limited in 1945 to all full professors. To this body, fifty elected faculty from the tenured ranks were added to represent their respective colleges in 1964. Membership was reduced in 1972 to one third of the resident full professors serving ex officio plus an elected body numbering half of the resident ex officio body. The 1996 constitution set the number of voting members at one per 150 faculty and designated ex officio members as non-voting.

Scope and Content

Series 78 contains the agenda and minutes of the Senate meetings. The Senate, or its appointed faculty committees, routinely considered recommendations for new colleges, departments, programs, and proposed curriculum requirements, the approval of the school-year calendar, constitution and university rule changes, student conduct policies and appeals, candidates for honorary degrees, and major issues confronting the University and higher education in Florida. Of particular interest are the proposed Senate resolutions concerning integration of the University in December 1955, a 1964 policy statement on faculty participation in Civil Rights demonstrations, and a number of resolutions concerning campus demonstrations and academic freedom from 1968-1973. For October 1986 through December 1990 there are complete transcriptions of senate meetings including a resolution related to America's war with Iraq.
