Biographical/Historical Note
The Research Council of the University of Florida was established in 1939 "to stimulate, encourage, and coordinate research... to clarify and enunciate general concepts essential to such a purpose; to undertake investigation relevant to the problems involved, and to devise ways and means of making its plans effective and prudent in University policies." The Council consisted of seven members appointed by the University President and was responsible for developing the University's policies on patents and copyrights. Eventually, responsibility for patents consumed the Council's entire attention.
The Council consisted of seven members appointed by the University President and was responsible for developing the University's policies on patents and copyrights. Eventually, responsibility for patents consumed the Council's entire attention. The Council was reorganized in 1954 with the Director of Research in the Office of Contract Research as chair. A special subcommittee, also chaired by the Director of Research, was responsible for patent problems. The Council was also given responsibility for distributing OCO funds related to research. In 1965, the Council became an adjunct of the Board of Directors of the Office (later Division) of Sponsored Research. The Council was dissolved in 1976.
