Scope and Content

Series 49 contains the administrative records of the University of Florida Vice President for Student Affairs and its predecessors, the Dean for Student Affairs, the Dean of Student Personnel, and the Dean of Students. The series documents a wide range of student matters including campus politics, fraternities and sororities, and disciplinary issues. The earliest files are those of deans Benjamin Arthur Tolbert and Robert Colder Beaty. These include material on war training during World War II, the student honor code, and the National Youth Administration. Dean Beaty served as chair of the National College Work Council of the NYA,1942-1943, chair of the Regional College Work Council, 1941, and director of the Florida NYA, 1936-1937.

Later records in this series contain information on student counseling, student unrest in the 1960s, campus crime, substance abuse, student health issues, and minority issues in the files of Dean Lester Leonard Hale and Vice President C. Arthur Sandeen. Also included in this series are records of Hale and Beaty when they served as Dean of Men.

Subseries 49a. Dean of Students Administrative Policy Records 1925-1960 (bulk 1940-1952)

Subseries 49a contains the records of Dean Benjamin Arthur Tolbert, Dean Robert Colder Beaty, and Assistant Dean J. Ed Price. The subseries contains Beaty's records as Dean of Students, 1938-1948, and Dean of Men, 1948-1952. It may also include some of Beaty's files when he served as Assistant Dean under Tolbert. Also attached are the miscellaneous letters, 1937-1962, of Dean Beaty. These contain personal letters and letters related to his work as a sociologist as well as administrative correspondence. The subseries is particularly rich in matters related to fraternities, student government, war training during World War II, and the student honor code. Of special note are Beaty's files related to the National Youth Administration. Beaty served as Chairman of the National College Work Council of the NYA, 1942-1943, Chairman of the Regional College Work Council, 1941, and Director of the NYA of Florida, 1936-1937. With the exception of a few letters in the miscellaneous correspondence, Beaty's role as Dean of Student Personnel, 1956-1960, and the last three years of his tenure as Dean of Men are not documented.

Subseries 49c. Vice President for Student Affairs Administrative Policy Records 1956-1973

Subseries 49c contains the administrative records of Lester Leonard Hale, Dean of Men (1956-1960), Dean of Student Affairs (1960-1967), and Vice President for Student Affairs (1968-1972). He stepped down in 1972 and served for one year as a special advisor in the Office of Academic Affairs surveying the University's career and academic counseling programs. Hale was also commencement marshall from 1949 to 1961.

The subseries is divided into an alphabetical subject file and an informational file. The former contains administrative records from his years as Dean of Men and head of Student Affairs. The informational files deal with special topics of concern to Hale. Many of the files contain speeches he gave as well as background information compiled for each speech. Others, such as the files on student radical organizations, focus on specific issues. Also included in the subseries are records dating back to 1949 related to commencements and the final reports for his 1973 counseling study.

Subseries 49d. Vice President for Student Affairs Administrative Policy Records 1970-1987 (Bulk 1981-1986)

Subseries 49d contain administrative records of Vice President for Student Affairs C. Arthur Sandeen for the years 1981-1986. With the Exception of a few documents, records for 1973-1980 are missing. Gaps in the existing record are also evident. Records related to fraternity incidents, campus and off-campus crime, financial aid and career counseling, and minority issues dominate this subseries. Also prominent are records related to substance abuse, AIDS, and other student health issues.

Divided into seven main file headings: Campus Administration, Committees, Community Relations, Events, Organizations, State University System, and Student Affairs Administration.
