Subseries 47b. Administrative Records of the College of Journalism and Communications Office of the Dean, 1956-2011 12.25 linear feet (13 boxes)

Ralph L. Lowenstein served as Dean of the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications from 1976 to 1994. As Dean, he led the college’s growth to become the second largest journalism school in the United States, and oversaw the operations of five professional broadcast stations. Lowenstein also helped usher the college into a new era of digital technology. Under his leadership, the college was one of the first journalism schools in the nation to install a computer network, a front-end editing system, and courses in the electronic newspaper. UF was the first U.S. school to establish a continually-updated, city wide, electronic newspaper, Sun.ONE.

Subseries 47b contains the administrative records and personal and professional papers of Dean Ralph Lowenstein, spanning the years 1956 to 2011. The bulk of the records date to his tenure as dean, between 1976 and 1994. In addition to files relating to the administration of the College of Journalism and Communications, one series contains video recordings on VHS and U-matic tapes of college ceremonies and dedications as well as numerous tapes of the interview program "Dialog" which aired on WUFT-TV in the 1990s. The subseries also contains personal and professional papers relating to Lowenstein's life and career as a journalist, writer and educator.

Contains correspondence, notes, essays, financial statements and budgets, reports and other documents, brochures, newspaper clippings, articles, books, photographs, and videocassettes. Some files include explanatory notes written by Lowenstein in 2011, when the records were prepared for transfer into the archives.

The subseries is further organized in three groups. Office of the Dean contains adminsitrative records of the College of Journalism and Communcations. Audiovisual Material contains videocassette recordings of college ceremonies and dedications, interviews, and the program "Dialog." Personal and Professional Papers contain other records relating to Lowenstein's personal life and career as a journalist, writer, and educator.
