Subseries 41a contains files of Dean Harry R. Trusler, 1915-1947, and Clifford W. Crandall, Acting Dean for 1948. Records of the first two deans, Albert J. Farrah, 1909-1912, and Thomas W. Hughes, 1912-1915, are not extant. The subseries is divided into annual files for 1915-1922 and subject files that cover the years 1921-1948. Records for 1915-1917 are scant and the level of documentation for subsequent years is inconsistent.

The annual files include both routine correspondence (letters of application from prospective students and faculty, personal letters of reference for graduates seeking positions, purchases for the law library, etc.) as well as more substantive material. After 1922, the annual file was used primarily for routine correspondence and most has been discarded. Retained were letters from former students and correspondence with several political and judicial leaders. Of particular interest are letters exchanged between Trusler and Senator Charles O. Andrews and Florida Supreme Court Justice Glen Terrell and letters received from law students serving in the armed forces during World War II. These letters are now located in the subject files under Miscellaneous Correspondence.

The subject files cover the years 1921-1948, but most of the record is concentrated in the period after 1935. Included in the subject files are records related to the Association of American Law Schools and the Florida State Bar Association, correspondence with Florida's Attorney General, committee files, the Dean's biennial reports to the President, and material on the Florida Bar Examination and the so-called "Diploma Privilege". Of special interests are the files on World War II and its effects on student enrollment and records related to the creation of the University of Florida Law Review. Also included in the subject files are correspondence files of several faculty members including Crandall, Robert Spratt Cockrell, and James Westbay Day. Among other matters, these files contain legal opinions given to law offices, former students, as well as friends and associates. Of related interest, are Trusler's opinion files as legal adviser to the University President before the establishment of a legal office for the University.

Subseries 41b contains the subject files of deans Henry Fenn and Frank E. Maloney. In addition to administrative correspondence, the subseries documents the college's relationship with various professional organizations such as the American Bar Association, Order of the Coif, Association of American Law Schools, and the Florida Bar Association. Topics discussed in the files include the College's building program, fundraising, legal ethics and education, and a controversy surrounding the dismissal of a faculty member for refusing to sign a loyalty oath. Of singular importance are the files regarding the admission of the first African-American student to the University of Florida, as a law student, in 1957.
