Biographical/Historical Note

The South Florida Military and Educational Institute was established in 1895 in Bartow and is considered by some to be one of several predecessors of the University of Florida. Its name was changed to the South Florida Military College in 1903 and was granted the authority to confer degrees. The school stressed scientific and technological studies. The college was abolished in 1905 by the Buckman Act and some of its civil engineering equipment was transferred to the University of Florida at Gainesville.


Scope and Content

Series 165 contains miscellaneous documents from the South Florida Military College. Included in the series are commencements programs, an issue of the Cadet Couranto, lists of alumni, and documents related to a proposed college magazine.
