The Board of Student
Publications was created in 1933 to exercise the supervisory functions
of the Faculty Committee on Student Publications. Unlike its predecessor,
the board also included student representatives. Membership consisted
of three faculty members appointed by the President and three students
elected by the student body. The head of the Journalism Dept. served
as chair and voted only to break a tie. In the 1950s, an electoral
board was created consisting of the members of the publication board, the
Honor Court Chancellor, and the Student Body President. The electoral board
was given the responsibility for selecting the officers of the publications
supported with student fees. The publications board was abolished in the
early 1970s.
The series consists
primarily of the Board's minutes. The minutes reflect the occasional
rancor that ensued over the content of articles in the student newspapers
and other publications. Several controversies are documented in unusual
detail including an apparent verbatim transcript of proceedings related
to a 1952 incident involving the campus satire magazine, the Orange Peel.
Other records include electoral board minutes and financial statements.
