Scope and Content

Series 145 contains selected items and photocopies of items retrieved from a time capsule placed in the corner stone of Leigh Hall at the University of Florida in 1926. Leigh Hall became the home for the Dept. of Chemistry and the College of Pharmacy. The time capsule was opened in October, 1994. Photocopies of manuscript materials were made for the University Archives and the originals were returned to the time capsule for a rededication of the building.

Several items were removed from the time capsule and placed in the Archives: the laboratory returnable and non-returnable lists (including the breakage card), the AAUS prayer song, and the poster announcing the opening of the School of Pharmacy. Photocopies of all but the latter were made and deposited in the time capsule for the rededication ceremony.

Item #1 is a list of items intended for the time capsule. When the capsule was opened, however, it was found that some items on the list never made it into the capsule. This list was not part of the time capsule, but was found in the Chemistry Department's records and includes several items not recorded on the list in the time capsule (item #2).

The series contains copies of articles and speeches by Townes Randolph Leigh, Walter H. Beisler, and other faculty members, class roles, historical notes on the Chemistry and Pharmacy programs, memorabilia, and other materials.
