Subseries 100a is divided into six headings: EXTENSION, AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION, CONSERVATION RESERVE, FORESTRY, GENERAL FILES, and MISCELLANEOUS FILES.

Subseries 100a contains the correspondence and other administrative papers of J. Wayne Reitz during his tenure as Provost for Agriculture. Reitz was named Acting Dean of Agriculture in 1949. Shortly after, he was selected to be agricultural provost. He served until 1956, when he became University President. Also included in the subseries are several folders from his predecessor, H. Harold Hume.

Included in the subseries are records related to the accreditation of the University's Agricultural Engineering program, the building program for the agricultural units, the Welaka Conservation Reserve, and the state's citrus industry. The latter includes records of the Citrus Fruit Advisory Committee, Citrus and Sub-tropical Advisory Committee, the Citrus Industry Planning Committee, and Florida Citrus Mutual. The University of Florida's participation in the development of the Inter-American Institute of Agricultural Sciences (Instituto Interamericano de Ciencias Agrícolas) in Costa Rica is substantially documented, especially in the MISCELLANEOUS FILES.

Subseries 100b contains the correspondence and administrative papers of the Office of Provost for Agriculture which became, in 1972, the office of the Vice President for Agricultural Affairs. This material documents the administrations of Provosts J. Wayne Reitz, 1949-1956, (see also Subseries 100a) and William M. Fifield, 1956-1964. The array of subject matter represented in this subseries is indicative of the expansion of the University's role in the state's rapidly growing agricultural sector which itself was becoming increasingly diverse and complex during the decades of the 1950s and 1960s. Much of the record reflects the older concerns of the post-war era. For example, one finds files on the tung industry, ramie, hog cholera eradication, and soil conservation. On the other hand many contemporary issues and problems are represented and even some harbingers of future concerns such as air pollution, atomic energy, irradiation, the Cross-Florida Barge Canal, and frozen foods technology.

There is much material on the citrus industry as well as vegetables and cattle. Many of Florida's lesser agricultural activities are represented, as well. Information on agricultural production and on the changing structure of the industry can be gleaned from the files of the many trade organizations with which the College of Agriculture maintained a running correspondence.

This subseries also documents the College's international programs, the principal one being the STICA program in Costa Rica (see also Subseries 100a and100c for earlier and later developments and a more complete record of the Costa Rican program). The domestic Rural Development Programs designed to run pilot demonstrations for the improvement of socioeconomic conditions in some of the rural counties of North Florida are also documented.

Subseries 100c contains the official correspondence and administrative records of Vice President for Agricultural Affairs E. Travis (E.T.) York, Jr. This body of material reflects the creation and rapid growth of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. It also documents E. T. York's special vision of the form that early growth was to take. Known as the DARE (Developing Agricultural Resources Effectively), York's programmatic efforts were directed toward strengthening the bonds between the state's agricultural interests and IFAS, particularly its research and extension divisions. Thus Subseries 100a provides documentation of the structure and composition of Florida's extensive and powerful corporate agricultural interests during a period of generally high growth and expansion. Citrus, vegetables, and cattle are featured, as these three forms dominated Florida agriculture, but there is also abundant documentation of the sugar and the dairy industry, the ornamentals and foliage industry, turf grass, the minor fruits and nuts, tobacco, and other branches of the state's agriculture.

Subseries 100c also includes correspondence and reports relating to international programs, particularly those programs associated with Latin America. The University's relationship with the Agency for International Development and several other international assistance operations is revealed, especially for Costa Rica and to a lesser degree, other Central American states. IFAS's involvement with the agricultural college at Turrialba in Costa Rica through the University of Florida's Center for Tropical Agriculture and the Interamerican Institute of Agricultural Sciences features prominently in these records.

In addition to the above, virtually every facet of Florida agriculture in the 1960s is touched upon in this subseries: agricultural engineering and economics, conservation and ecological studies, water management, labor, Indian affairs, taxes, rural development, and marketing. The series also reflects to a lesser degree the internal affairs of IFAS and one may find here, for example, correspondence and policy statements regarding campus unrest during the period of student protests and resistance against the U.S. involvement in Vietnam.
