Scope and Content
Jackson McDonald's scrapbook contains 238 black and white photographs mostly depicting people and events at the University of Florida, the Florida State College for Women (known today as Florida State University), and several cities in south Florida including Stuart, Palm Beach, and Fort Myers.
The scrapbook, created by Jackson McDonald, Class of 1924, contains photographs that were professionally made, as well as images created privately by McDonald and others. Many of the latter are of friends and family. There are also several pieces of memorabilia in the scrapbook. Of note are the images of the Student Army Training Corps, the University of Florida Band, and the Stuart High School Class of 1918. Of special note are images of the New York Giants at spring training at the University of Florida in 1919. These include photos of manager John J. McGraw and pitching coach and Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson. Other players are identified in the contents list.
The scrapbook documents a number of trips taken by McDonald. Included is a band trip to the Florida State College for Women and perhaps other trips to Florida State College for Women to visit friends and relatives enrolled there. McDonald continued his military training after World War I and there are shots of maneuvers and barracks at Fort Lee, Virginia. There are also images of Washington, D.C., and Spring Lake, New Jersey, and a photograph of Florida Governor Sidney Catts. The scrapbook ends with images of McDonald, his wife (Ruth Chaffee McDonald), and his son.
A number of people from the Stuart and Palm Beach area are identified. These include high school classmates and other friends such as Merle Smith, Loris "Doc" Eurit, Darrel G. Smith, Leeson "Slim" Hogarth, Lawson "Dottie" Zeigler, Shelby McCulley, W. Jack Dyer, Laura Wright, Mary Witham, Gladys Parks, Florence Dyer, Hazel Dyer, Myrtle Dyer, Alfreda Fuge, and Bertha Gram.
Some images were removed from the scrapbook before it was acquired by the University of Florida. All images, except one, are glued onto the pages.
