Biographical/Historical Note

Richard W. Bowles was the director of University of Florida bands. He came to the University of Florida in 1958 as an assistant director and became the director of all UF bands in 1961. He taught various instruments as the trombone and several music courses. In 1973 he retired as director of bands but continued to teach in the Department of Music.


Scope and Content

The items in this collection consist of copies of the original scores of two concert marches Bowles composed. They are two of the more than 100 pieces he composed and which were published. One is "The Invisible Boundary" and the other is "Sword and Shield." Also included is a published copy of "The Invisible Boundary" and a publicity release, dated October 1969, on the two pieces.
