Biographical/Historical Note

Guy Chandler Fulton was Architect to the Board of Control from 1945 until 1956. In this position he had the responsibility of both designing and supervising the construction of buildings at the University of Florida as well as other state institutions including Florida State University, Florida A and M University, and the Schoool of the Deaf and the Blind in St. Augustine.

Guy Chandler Fulton was born on October 27, 1892 in Hamilton Hancock Co., Illinois. He was graduated from the University of Illinois in 1916 with an A.B. degree in Architecture. He worked for several architectural firms and offices until his appointment to the Board of Control. One of his main themes was that the buildings on the UF Campus be designed as a unified group. The buildings erected during his tenure reflect this cohesion. Most notable among the many buildings designed and supervised by Fulton on the UF Campus were the addition to Library East (now the Smathers Library), dormitories (as Hume, Mallory, Yulee, and Rawlings), and the Teaching Hospital.
