Manuscript Collection 73

Edward Orville Powers collection, ca. 1890-1900.

45 items.

Edward O. Powers was an engineering student at the Florida Agricultural College at Lake City in the 1890s. He graduated in 1895 with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering and worked as an electrician in St. Augustine. His father, Henry C. Powers, was an engineering instructor at the college from 1890 to 1897. In 1900, Edward Powers returned to his birthplace in Beloit, Wisconsin.

The Powers Collection contains photographs and sketches depicting the college, Lake City, and other Florida sites. Included among the photographs are images of students and buildings that also appear in the college catalog. These, and similar pictures that are not in the catalog, appear to be professionally done. Other images, presumably taken by Edward Powers, depict buildings, people, and street scenes. Many of the photographs are part of a scrapbook; others are individual images. The sketches were done by Edward Powers and include College Hall, a portrait of Henry Powers, a wooden schoolhouse in Lake City, Lake Hamburg, and the Hotel Ponce De Leon. Also in the collection are five textbooks used by Powers, including two with the college's textbook regulations, his enrollment papers in the Florida State Troops, and a journal. The last item contains his chemistry notes and an account of a 1893 trip from Lake City to the Chicago Exposition.

All Florida photographs have been reproduced and have been filed in the photograph collections of the University Archives and the Library of Florida History.  The photographs have also been scanned and the images appear in the University of Florida Digital Collections.
