Biographical/Historical Note

Richard H. Hiers was born in Pennsylvania in 1932. He earned a Ph.D. in religious studies and ethics from Yale University in 1961 and a J.D. from the University of Florida in 1983. He was employed at the University of Florida for a span of forty-two years beginning in 1961 and ending in 2003 at the time of his retirement. He is the author of several publications in the field of Biblical studies, particularly related to the "historical Jesus," Biblical ethics, and religion and law. In addition, he has authored several works on legal issues such as free speech, discrimination in employment, and academic freedom. Throughout his career, he served as a local and regional officer in several organizations and honor societies including the American Academy of Religion, the Society of Biblical Literature, Phi Kappa Phi, and the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). In his capacity as a member of the University of Florida Chapter of the AAUP he worked towards university collegial governance and improved relations in academic institutions.


Scope and Content

Correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes, publications, newsletters, and notes. The collection documents several aspects of his academic, professional, and social activities from 1960 to 2003. A majority of materials pertains to his involvement in the University of Florida Chapter of the American Association of University Professors. The collection also includes material related to several University committees, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Religion, faculty-administration relations and governance in academic institutions. Several files are related to the University College and its merger with the College of Arts and Sciences in 1978 to become the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Also covered are his activities with the Citizens' Action Committee of the Gainesville City Commission.

Series 1 - American Association of University Professors, 1962-1987

Although the majority of the material pertains to the University of Florida Chapter, this series contains files relating to the AAUP at the local, state, and national levels. The correspondence, minutes, newsletters, memoranda, reports, and other papers document the activities of Hiers and the organization through his roles as chapter president, as legislative liaison, and as a member of several committees. A number of files pertain to the relationship between the administration and faculty at the University of Florida, including issues such as termination, censure, shared governance, promotion and tenure, and education at UF and in the State of Florida. In addition, the papers reveal the relationship between AAUP and organizations such as the American Federation of Teachers and the United Faculty of Florida. This series is arranged alphabetically.

Series 2 - University of Florida Committees, 1960-1999

This series consists of material pertaining to committees on which Hiers served during his tenure as a faculty member at the University of Florida. Primarily correspondence, memoranda, and reports, the files document the activities and thoughts of the committees and their members. Of particular interest are the committee that worked on the University constitution, the various committees dealing with professional relations and standards, a committee that investigated the role of women at the University, and the Committee on Curriculum Structure and Grading Practices in the University College. The files in this series are arranged alphabetically.

Series 3 - University of Florida General Files, 1963-2003

This small series contains material pertaining to the University of Florida, but not specifically related to committees or the Religion Department in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Several files pertain to the American Civilization Seminar, a group of faculty at UF who met once monthly for socializing and presentations by members on scholarly or personal topics of interest. Of particular interest are the files pertaining to the University College, which merged with the College of Arts and Sciences in 1978 to become the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. A prominent correspondent in this series is John Lombardi, former president of the University. The files in this series are arranged alphabetically.

This series primarily consists of departmental correspondence, memoranda, and reports. The majority of the files are simply general files, but a few deal with specific topics such as search committees, discussion about a graduate program for the department, and a history of the department written at the time of its fiftieth anniversary in 1996 but revised by Hiers in 1999. This series contains material related to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, including correspondence, memoranda, reports, and information on special programs such as "Focus on Teaching" and "Frontiers of the Mind." Several files pertain to the College Assembly, which is comprised of the faculty and several students of the College and through which its members may act on matters affecting the entire College. Also of interest are files relating to the role of the college in providing general education, as well as a self-study of the College completed by all departments in 1971. Series 6 - Citizens' Action Committee (Gainesville), 1964-1972

This series includes correspondence and reports created by the Citizens' Action Committee, a body through which "active citizen participation is provided to aid and support the development and carrying out of the Workable program for Community Improvement," according to a 1969 annual report. The activities of this group primarily involved housing and development in Gainesville, and a few files specifically pertain to the committee's business with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Several documents also pertain to the Citizens Safety Council. The files are arranged alphabetically.
