Walter Jeffries Matherly
was born May 3, 1888 in Mackville, Kentucky. He received a B.A. from
William Jewell College in Missouri and an M.A. from Washington University
in 1916. He taught at the University of North Carolina before coming
to the University of Florida in 1926 to organize its business school.
Matherly was its first dean and served in that capacity until his death
on September 25, 1954. He was the driving force in the creation of
the Southern Economic Association and served as its first president.
This collection consists
of manuscripts of speeches and writings and reprints and actual publications.
The manuscript titles are contained in boxes 1-5 and cover Matherly's years
at Florida. Numbers in brackets next to a title indicate the number
of versions for that title. Box 5 includes the manuscripts
for his book, Business Education in the Changing South. Box
6 contain publications that were pulled from a deaccessioned collection
entitled Professors in Print. The Matherly cards from Professors
in Print have been reproduced and follow the folder list for the manucript
boxes. These include writings by Matherly prior to his appointment
as dean in 1926.
