Biographical/Historical Note

Irene Thompson was born March 30, 1919 in New York. She received a BA degree in English and Philosophy from Adelphi College in 1939 and a MA degree in English from New York University in 1955. She began teaching English at the University of Florida in 1966 after teaching high school English. In 1971, Thompson taught the University's first women's studies course, and went on to become the first director of the Center for Women's Studies and Gender Research in addition to her role as a founding member. Before her retirement in 1986, she also served as chairperson of the President's Committee on the Status of Women at the University and contributed her wisdom and time to the salary equity tribunals held in the 1970s. Her publications include articles on widowhood and feminist critical theory, as well as two books published by the Modern Language Association on the topic of women in academia. She is Associate Professor Emerita of the English department at the University of Florida.

Scope and Content

Correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, publications. The majority of the collection consists of files related to Thompson's academic work at the University of Florida, particularly with women's issues. In addition to material pertaining to the College of Arts and Sciences and the English Department, there are numerous general files, committee files, and files concerning the Women's Studies program. This last group is especially valuable because it documents the founding, early administration, and curriculum of the program. Of particular interest in the general and committee files are those materials pertaining to her work reviewing salary inequities between men and women faculty and the files related to the status of women at UF.

In addition to the numerous university files, there are several files that reveal her activities as a member of professional organizations including the Modern Language Association, the American Association of University Professors, and the South Atlantic Modern Language Association. There are also a small number of personal and professional files that primarily document her writings, addresses, and other work related to women's issues.
