Biographical/Historical Note

Roy C. Craven Jr. was an artist who used the mediums of painting, sculpture, and photography. He was an associate professor of art at the University of Florida when he was appointed as acting director of the University of Florida new Gallery in September 1964. Craven also was an author of about a dozen books on the subjects of the art of India and Mayan ceremonial sites as well as exhibit catalogs. From 1962-63 he was in India as a senior research scholar under the Fulbright Program.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of 271 black and white photographic prints. The majority of the prints are of historic Mayan ceremonial sites located in Mexico in the Yucatan Peninsula, Guatemala, and Honduras. Some of the sites include Tikal, Uxmal, Palenque, and Chichen Itza. There are also photographs of sites such as Machu Picchu in Peru (Inca), historic churches and contemporary architecture in cities as Rio de Janeiro, and scenes of the countryside. There are detailed descriptions on the reverse side of each photograph with information about the date of the site or building and the geographical location. Each photograph was given a code and then sequentially numbered within that code.
